Question about personal debt & cpa

Excuse me if this is a dumb question but I need some advice.

I have personal debt that the collector just sent a judgment for to the court. I know I should have not let it get this far, I do not want to get into details regarding this but it is not a large amount and I will be paying it off now.

But my question is besides it looking horrible on my credit report during background check.. can a judgment keep me from getting my cpa license?

    Thank you for the response,

Also does anyone know any tricks or advice on how to get a judgment/debt off the credit report once it is paid?

Yes, pay the collector only on the condition that they remove it from your credit report once you do pay. If you make the request they have little recourse to deny you.

I've been in prior job interviews where they flat out ask if you've ever filed bankruptcy or had a bad credit report.

Fortunately, none of that matter to obtain a CPA license.

Yeah jobs can ask for your credit report, but it has never been asked of me. I have heard talk of them trying to get rid of this practice because it unfairly discriminates against minorities. I think it is dumb anyway and an intrusion. I do not want an employer to view my credit report and see info on my prior medical conditions because I have medical debt. That is not necessary to be disclosed according to the ADA, especially before I am hired. Anyway, a bit of a rant, but I agree you are okay for getting your CPA license.

Nope has nothing to do with your license.

Checking credit reports is hardly discriminatory especially in the accounting/finance field. Think back to the fraud triangle we all studied.

I hardly think one or two blemishes on a credit report alarm an employer, they're looking for patterns and all. A medical bill from 4 years ago, not a big deal. Big revolving credit balances written off in 2003, 2010 and 2013 paint a troublesome picture of someone who consistently overextends themselves and now has motive to commit fraud.

y u no, credit reports don't show your medical conditions LOL! It shows you owe/owed $x to y and when. That's it.

If you haven't actually seen your credit report get it! Get it once a year! You need to know if things show up on there that shouldn't or if you'd forgotten that one impulsive charge at Macy's that you forgot to pay (can't believe people still do that). Usually you're entitled to one free copy per year.

Nothing to do with receiving you license.

I worked at a Credit Union years ago, and credit reports make a huge difference in banking careers. Bad credit due to medical debts is not such a big deal, but bad credit due to over leveraging yourself is a big no no. A blind eye can be turned to things such as divorce resulting in bad credit, but irresponsibility with finances creates stress that could lead to fraud. So, they only discriminate against people who are financially irresponsible to decrease the risk of fraud. Saying that they are discriminating against minorities has nothing to do with a bad credit report. Sorry to burst your bubble there. 🙂

    Thanks everyone.

I have tried the method of telling them that I will pay it only if they remove it from my credit report after payment, but they keep saying they do not have control over it. I know they have the ability to remove it just do not know how to convince them to do it. Waiting for a supervisor from their company to call me back, will see if that works.

@mla I've seen my credit report. It shows who I owe. And everyone in my town knows the kind of care that place provides so it essentially tells them my medical conditions.

@ positive I googled this and found a few choices. I think you may have less leverage now though, because they are seeking a judgment already.

@y_u_no_pass thanks for the googling. Curious if you found anything different from me.. could you post a link? or share the suggestions.

and just to be clear guys even if it is a judgment rather than just a debt on my credit report.. still will have no connection to me getting my license?

Sorry to be annoying.. But can anyone advise? So nervous a debt judgment will affect me getting a license. Anyone know if its the same as debt, no affect on license?

You have already been advised. Has nothing to do with CPA licensure.
