Isn’t it a general norm that emails written entirely in CAPLOCK’S is considered to be shouting/yelling at the person receiving the email ?

I do not receive any emails like that. But from common knowledge I do believe that is what it supposed to mean… sorry I am no help. Do you get emails like this at work?

Its general email etiquette, no capital letters, unless its part of sentence structure. No flashing red emails or in color not professional. Don’t use text language (u’re and smileys) because your email/response might be forwarded to an important person. Avoid signatures that have decorative or creative fonts i.e. comic, italics, Bradley hand etc. Generally assume that someone is reading your work email which most organizations do nowadays. Spell check, check your spell check (effect, affect etc.)

Don't facebook or blog about your workday or who you are having an affair with, or how much you hate your work/boss/Sally in the other cube etc. Don't put yourself in a tight spot. I have seen people get fired for way less or become miserable at work.

Well today I got an email from someone that had the whole email in caplock's and it has been the second time that the same person did that.

I was kind of puzzled why would they put in caplocks.

So I write back politely with the information being asked and at the bottom said. PS, Why is your email in Caplocks?

The reply I got back was because it was ON.

My response was – oh okay I was wondering since I understand emails that are all in Caplocks are meant to be a form of shouting at someone.

Their response back – Your are being too sensitive.

I am thing Huh ? Whats so sensitive about that? All I did was make a general inquiry to make sure if the email was meant to be a harsh tone or otherwise.

Sometimes I receive emails from directors and managers and some of these emails have harsh undertones.

Replying quickly to those emails will not help out the situation, I try to cool off and allow sometime before responding.

This has been helpful, I realised its not good to reply quickly when you feel sensitive about an email.

Well that person was my peer level and I did not reply back all sensitive or upset, i just make an inquiry on why is your email in Capital letters.

First time they sent me an email like this was a month ago. I said nothing and replied back with the information being asked.

This is the second time a email was sent for something different and now I got curious. Hmmm why is it in Caplocks. So I simply asked, if there is a reason why its on Caplocks.

Once I was told oh its just because it is on. I let them know as a FYI – capital emails are general seen as a yelling or telling off the receiver of that email.

So with the response of oh you are too sensitive – I figure well its their downfall since I was just letting them know, if they can't acknowledge I was trying to clarify a situation then its them being sensitive.

I would never send emails in Capital letters (like the whole email is in capital letters). Not even to my reports. I would underline a word to make it emphasis something but that is about it.

I don't do smiley's or colored fonts or all that on work emails. I don't send jokes or fwds or anything like that either using my work email. Its always using my personal email to the other persons personal email.

Anyways – all I wanted to confirm was isn't it a general norms emails in Capital letters are seem as someone being harsh to another. I know this is the case in Canada and the UK. I was making sure its a norm in the US too.

    “Because it was on.” ?

Wow, sounds like this person is very lazy.

I can't wait to find out what happens when they send an email like that to a manager/supervisor.

A couple of years ago, when my Mum got her first computer and she wanted to send me an email, she called me and said: This freakin Computer is broken, I only can write in capital letters!”.

I was out with friends and I couldn't stop laughing!!

She didn't know how to switch from caps to normal letters.

    It was sooooo funny!!!

Maybe the same happened to you boss???? HAHAHAHAAAA
