    Hello everyone,

I received an offer almost a year ago after my internship from one of the Big 4 in a location outside of a major city. This Big 4 paid for my Becker CPA review materials direct line. Since then, I have passed 3 of the 4 CPA exams and I am currently studying for my last. I have not started work yet, and have just received an offer from a different Big 4 in the major city, which I would prefer to take. Will I have to pay the other firm back for the review materials (almost $5,000 retail value) or was that a risk they assumed? I would like to take this offer, but I do not have $5,000 to spend on review materials to pay back the other firm.

    Thanks for your help!

Yes, you are responsible for CPA material fees if you break the employment contract. Use the bonus you get from the other one to pay off the first one.

Is it likely that they will ask for a reimbursement? I would somewhat expect the first firm to let it go and not handle such a trivial thing (to them, anyway, $5,000 is about 5 cents).

You're not understanding the details of the transaction. You are going to owe Becker, not the firm. The firm pays a completely different rate than you. When you don't fulfill your side of the agreement, the firm will cancel that payment and you will now be responsible to pay Becker at the normal cost. Becker will come for its money. You know you can read all of this in the material the firm gave you. It's also in the contract you signed with Becker when you got the material, I believe.

I'm pretty sure bigfourexpert is right. Have you looked at your employment contract? I believe it talks about it in there.

Yes, you will probably have to pay at some point.

As far as I recall, there was no specific contingency in the “contract”, but if they tell Becker you're going to pay, I'm not sure if you have the legal backing to fight it.

What I believe *should* happen, is they will get the bill and pay it all. I think they get billed twice a year, or something like that. I remember seeing the Becker fees added to my pay stub and taxes deducted like 6 months after I started working there.
