Rant about Swearing, Rude Client

I’m just ranting. My firm was bought out by a great firm in August 2013. Previously I’d been job searching the entire 3 years I’d been there. To be exact I was in the job 2 months and began job searching again.

Unfortunately my old boss is still there and I’m still supervised by him in addition to the other 2 partners. He has a few clients that are absolutely demanding and obnoxious and he refuses to deal with them and sticks you to deal with them. Today was really bad because this one has serious issues. She called screaming that we hadn’t paid her taxes and needed to get our s#! together. I explained we only filed quarterlies for her and she was responsible for her sales tax and payroll taxes. She screamed and cussed me out so I told her we needed to talk another time and hung up.

She called back, cussed out our receptionist and cussed more at me. So I told my boss, “Joe”, about this and he said he didn’t want to deal with her and sometimes “people just do this but they’re paying clients so there’s nothing we can do”. I talked to the other 2 partners and they want to cut her loose as a client but Joe is livid I talked to them about her meltdown. She’s done this many times before- called and had a screaming, swearing meltdown on 3 other staff members.

Good night, this sounds like a nightmare. You should definitely let her go, but it sounds like you don't have much of a choice in the matter.

There's nothing wrong with firing a client. Addition by subtraction.

Sorry to hear of this. We had a guy who was condescending and rude, less of a swearer. Partners just stopped talking to him at a certain point and let staff and middle management deal with it. Comes with the territory.

I had a client try to do the exact same thing once. ONCE! He got as good as he gave and we've been just fine since. He's still a client too.

Having a client that is demanding extra services from you, yet not paying for those services, is as good a reason as any to cut them loose. I have a client who is constantly trying to get me to do free stuff for her. She tries to go through me directly instead of the account manager for her requests, which usually leads to a rude back and forth between her and the account manager. On top of which, she is terrible to her own staff. She once basically called her staff idiots in an e-mail to me, and copied them on it!
