    Hello everyone,

I asked a partner at one of the Big 4’s for a referral and they agreed. A few days later I received an email from a person from campus referrals asking me apply to ONE postion from the 4 positions listed in the email. It stated that I had to reply back to the email once I completed my profile.

Has anyone encountered this situation before? What can I expect? Should I ask the partner for their advice ( I would have to wait 2 days before asking the partner for advice..not sure if that would be too late).

Any info that can help me land a job at this company would be appreciated.

Background info:I recently graduated in February with a MS in Accounting.

    Thanks in advance

What's the problem? The partner did the referral, which is why you're supposed to reply to the email once your profile is created and application submitted – so that they can pull the application and interview you. They don't want to interview you for 4 positions, only your top choice.

@impska I understand that. But since this is the first time I ever received such a referral I wanted to know how the process works.

I really really want to work for this company and do the want anything to go wrong so I'm asking my friends here to see what they think

@stole it was through a friend

Getting the referral will definitely get you the initial interview. Now its up to you to sell yourself in that interview and get an offer. I have always viewed referrals as a way to get my resume in front of a hiring manager or a recruiter.

You go to the interview. When you're done, you send a thank you note/email to the partner for referring you.

You don't have to send him flowers or take him out to dinner. 😉

Seriously though, don't email him at this point to ask what to do. You've been told what to do – apply and respond to the email.

Imagine you're in the partner's shoes and you get an email “Thanks for the referral, someone from your firm emailed me telling me to apply and I don't know what to do!!”

Do you -need- advice on which position to take? If you don't, then apply for your top pick. If you do need more info, I wouldn't wait two days – get the info you need from the person who sent the email or from your friends and apply ASAP.

@impska thanks for your response. I really want to work for this company so I was thinking about asking my friend to show the partner the email and ask for their recommendation on which position to apply to. Maybe they have the inside knowledge of which have position is more likely to hire me.bad move?

    Cpanovice:

No, do not ask the partner which positino youwant. You should know which position you want (audit vs tax), or do the homework and find out what you want to start off doing for 1-2 years.

Both are different enough in what they prepare you for, so that's a decision you have to make. It would be like asking your friend “Please pick my college major.”

I agree with Fuzyfro. It makes you look like an indecisive weenie.

Google the positions and make a choice.

Definitely do not indicate that you're making any choice based on which position is most likely to hire you. Never say that.

CPAInvoice I think you are thinking too much into it. As someone stated above you pick the job that you think will be of interest to you. You have to make that decision because only you would know after reading the job description that you would enjoy doing that type of work. And as someone else stated applying for the job is just so your information is in the system and they can start the hiring process. Which would be to review your resume and get a phone interview with HR and then eventually an in person interview.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I think ill go ahead and apply to a position of my choice without asking the partner for their recommendation.
