Hey Jeff,
I was wondering how much weight I should place on the last two chapters of the Becker Reg book. Ch 6 (Commerical Paper, Secured Transactions, & Real Property) and Ch. 7 (Agency, Bankruptcy, Securities, Liability, & Property Insurance). The study guide at the front of the 2010 book, doesn't even have them in the study schedule. I know business law is only 20-25% of the entire exam, and I'm thinking contracts makes up the majority of that. I know it's good to learn everything, but my exam is on Monday. Should I just focus on really nailing down the tax and contracts sections, and just kind of lightly review the rest. Any advice you have would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Speaking of Becker's 2010 REG section, many updates have been posted to the thresholds and amounts printed in the text. I am assuming the exam will test the present 2010 situation, not 2009, correct? For example, in 2010 the itemized deduction phase-outs are no longer in place, so that's what would apply for the exam, right?
Thanks,
Jan
Hi everyone,
I am taking REG on the 31st and have some concern regarding the Estate tax. I know for 2010 this and the generational skipping have effectively been removed.
On the first final exam in Becker the second sim has an estate subject matter, which I find to be wholly unhelpful since the tax law changes should be in effect on the test now.
I was hoping someone could clarify exactly how Estate taxes could be tested still. I have not learned the 2009 rules at all since they do not apply anymore.
Thanks for any insight.
Estate tax rules are tested on the exam.... I know becker discusses the rules that applied to 2009 and then just has a blurb saying in 2010 it is removed (changed). I would not count on only being tested only on "2010" information.
Thanks for replying koliver. When did you take your REG test? It seems odd to have material on the test for 2009 rules since it has been over 6mo. since the changes have come into play.
@potatogun... i took my exam on august 6th. I believe they continue to test on it because the rules will be reinstated (maybe with some chages) next year. They could never give us soon-to-be CPAs a break on an exam, could they? good luck!
Ya, it isn't so much an issue with learning material it is just the uncertainty of WHAT material. A bit ridiculous. Thanks for your help. I will give the 2009 rules a once over at least.
I just took Regulation and it sucked! It's my last exam and I don't have the slightest idea of how I did. I just want this torture to be over.
taking the exam tomorrow....any suggestions of where I should focus on the last day??
Thanks
CPA - Valez - just started studying for this. How did you find the material compared to the other parts? I started with the Business Law section and it is fairly borring. Also congrats on FAR, just noticed you passed.
Good luck on the test.
Well I am off to take REG, my last exam.
I keep singing:
It's the end of the exam as I know it
It's the end of the exam as I know it
It's the end of the exam as I know it
And I feel fine
financeguy-
Good luck! And congrats on your FAR score!
Well this was my least prepared exam, however I think the material was somewhat the easiest of any exam for me. I have no idea how I did. Its a coin flip. I could not notice a difference in the testlets, but I never have been able to for any exam. I heard so much about reg being pressed for time, but I actually finished w/ 45 min to go. I never took a break and then on my last sim I really, really had to go to the bathroom and that ended speeding me way up. Overall the sims were not bad at all.
I have no idea if I passed, but it wouldn't shock me if I did not pass. Either way, I'm finally done studying at least until scores come out.
Took my exam today.....not too bad. I have got my fingers crossed!!!!
@ Gabe....I would rate the test from hardest to not so hardest FAR, BEC, REG, AUD.
Reg was so much better than studying for FAR. I hated FAR!!!!!
Yaeger starts out with going over taxes so that's where I started. I like taxes though.
I am actually tacking Business Law first as it seems I should be able to do my first pass in 3 days. Will look at taxes next. It has to be better than Business Law! I enjoy anything accounting/concept related over memorization.
Taxes aren't really that principles based so you'll have to memorize a lot there too.
Somehow accounting related rules are easier to remember than the Business Law material. Probably because I can relate back to what I do on a daily basis and it seems more interesting.
Update: My REG Study Guide now covers Gift/Estate/Trust Tax and is 72 pages. If you have a previous version, e-mail me and I'll update your copy.
Took REG a couple of weeks ago - got hammered with a certain concept that I have a lot of trouble with, so those 10-12 questions could have very well ruined my score! I thought the sims were pretty reasonable. I've always had plenty of time to spare on my exams, but for some reason, I finished REG with only 4 minutes to spare. Now it's back to re-studying BEC and AUD for Oct/Nov testing!
Hi all,
I'm studying for REG using becker's 2010 book. All the material notes 2009 amounts. I did find the updates on the Becker website for 2010, and some of the limitations that were in place for 2009 have expired for 2010, or are in legislation. I'm wondering for those points there are currently in legislation (in progress of renewal) can I skip? For example in REG2 pg22, during 2009 individuals were allowed to use the sales tax deduction when itemizing. The 2010 Becker updates says:
The Sales Tax deduction expired at the end of 2009. There is currently legislation in Congress to extend this through 2010.
Should I even bother studying similar material regarding 'legislation in Congress'.??
abc123- I was about to post the same question, I am just about finished with Reg 1 and saw that there a lot of updates for the becker's 2010 book.
I have another question too, there was a supplemental information update on the Becker website as well that is 25 pages long on like-kind exchanges, should I go through all of this information or just go through it if I have time at the end? It seems to be a lot of details about different situations in regards to like-kind exchanges.
abc and michelle -
I worried about the 2009/2010 updates when I was studying a couple of weeks ago, as well. If you notice in the practice questions, the question will normally say 'In 200X'. They don't try to trip you up on this on the exam. Don't worry about it too much! Hope this helps somewhat.
Study the like-kind exchanges supplemental pdf.
Best way to mitigate the risks of using an older review course- buy a Wiley book and do that your last few weeks of studying. I used Becker 2009 for BEC, FAR, and AUD and then for the last two weeks of studying, I do all of the questions in the 2010 Wiley book a few times. The questions are harder than Becker too! Best part is, the books are only about $35 each if you buy them on Amazon! Getting geared up for REG in October:)
Thanks for the tip Nickk!! The biggest issue I have is that I have the Becker 2010 stuff but they still provide all 2009 amounts and such in the book and their website isn't the best of describing the changes as you probably already know. I may look into the Wiley book though for only $35. When are you sitting for Reg?
October 23rd
The thing with the Wiley books that I didn't like is they are so huge! It's like looking at a dictionary. I have been using Becker, and the smallest (thinnest) section is AUD... the Wiley book for AUD was thicker than my largest section FAR. Wiley has detail on EVERY SINGLE aspect, where Becker only highlights the areas that have been previously tested on the exam. So in my opinion, WILEY was extremely overwhelming.
I'm considering Jeff's notes for REG and wondering if he has to include the income from sales in his gross income.. ha jk.. but am wondering if anyone who has used them found them to be helpful?????
I used them for Audit and plan on using them for Regulation as well. I definitely think that they helped me a lot with audit, I haven't looked at the Reg notes but they will probably be just as helpful!
