One other piece of advice I would have is do as many practice simulations as you can. Most of them arent exactly what you see on the exam, but the simulations are definitely the hardest part of the exam.

I just began to study for REG, and I'm working on getting the foundational material down. I have study materials, but none offer any practice on the simulations. What do any of you suggest my best approach to be to practice these? I was looking at CPAexcel and it appears they offer extensive practice for the sims, so I'm considering buying the REG part primarily for this reason. Any other suggestions? I'm anticipating the sims will be my biggest challenge on this section…

Any practice is good, but you have to realize that with so many potential questions about so many potential topics there's no way to fully prepare for the REG SIMS. I used the Wiley test bank which had several SIMS. If you're interested you can go through another71 to get it at a discount.

Wiley test Bank SIMS were a little better than the Becker Review SIMS IMO

Thanks for the replies about using the Wiley test bank and sims…I finally found my thumb drive for Yaeger which I purchased 6 months ago (thought I lost it). ‘m finally motivated again to study. Is there any advantage to purchasing the online questions and simulations for Wiley since I already have them in book format? I see it's only $87, and I prefer doing the work on the computer instead of a book, but would I be buying what I already have? I also plan on getting the ninja notes.

Question about Yaeger. I'm almost through individual tax and Dr. Yaeger is fairly adament about skipping over the Wiley material he doesn't cover and only doing the questions he suggests. For those that have used Yaeger and took the exam, what are your thoughts on this? I was planning to do all the MCQ's for individual tax once I complete the lectures, figuring the more the better. Regarding the material he is skipping over, I have recollection from my tax courses (1 year ago), but noticed I'm rusty on a lot of it. So, for those that used Yaeger/Wiley and took REG, what do you all think about what Dr. Yaeger suggests to stick to his outline? Do more, or stick to his suggestions? I'm under the impression that it's all going to be fair game…

There's some overlap, but most of the questions in the test bank are different than the text. I liked the test bank better than the text because I could go through it faster (did it in study mode), and it helped me get faster on my MCQ. I didn't do Yaeger, but I'd heard about his recommendation. There is some validity to his reasoning because there are some discrepancies in the problems especially if you look at two different companies. However, I needed all the practice I could get and am glad I did all the problems in the text and test bank and Becker Passmaster. You're right that everything is fair game on this exam.

Hi, I'm taking FAR in October and am really scared! there is soooo much material. I'm using Becker. All I'm doing is watching videos and then doing problems from Passmaster. I made a lot of notecards, which i'm not sure I'll get to read any because there are bazillions of problems in the Passmaster. I'm just on F2 and finding the material super hard. Any tips? Anyone took FAR this year, how were the sims? Did anyone memorize the differences between GAAP and IFRS?

I took FAR in 11/2010 but I think my experience will be useful for you.

It was the first one I took so did it the hard way. But for the other three I did them like this:

    1. went through the lectures and took notes of all the highlighted ones (both yellow n green highlights – Becker) in the flash card.

    2. i always included the mnemonics + pass keys on the flash card

    3. after the lecture i would go through the chapter (eg F1, F2) once

    4. then do the home work questions (i usually did not have the patience for supplemental questions, i would do it before the exam if i had time).

    5. great thing about making notes in the flash cards is that, when u have to read the chapters the second time around u don't need to flip the pages of the book and for me flashcards seemed a lot more quicker to finish than the book.

then I would do the homework questions again, and the second time around u really understand the homework questions better and it really sticks with u.

For FAR I would recommend doing the passmaster questions at least 3 times!

    I hope that was helpful

PS: I think you are taking notes of the passmaster questions, just take notes from the chapters, if u know the concept u ll be able to handle any kind of question.

The best thing for the SIMS is to do enough practice SIMS to be comfortable with the types of formats you'll see. Beyond that, the more MCQ you do the better because these help you gain better understanding of all the concepts. There are too many potential SIM questions for you to practice them all, but you should be OK if you understand the basic concept. They're tough but, for the most part, doable if you know the material.

You do need to know the differences between IFRS and GAAP. Becker has a nice summary at the end of each lecture.

Make sure you know govt/NFP well. They're 16-24% of exam.

In the 2 1/2 months I've been on this site, I've seen a number of posts with tips for FAR both in the general FAR thread and several individual threads. Look through these and try the ideas that seem to fit with your study style and schedule.

    Good luck.

Preferential transfers are transfers of money or property which having the following elements:
    a. transfers to or for the benifits of unsecure creditors

    b. for or on preexisisting debt

    c. debtor was insolvant at the time of the transfer

    d. the transfer was made 90 days prior to bankruptcy (one year for insiders) and

    e. creditor's (transferee's) position improved – ex. transfer made to unsecure creditor outside of   the bankruptcy process.

    hope this helps.

Anyone with experience taking this section in 2011 (or perhaps any year for that matter) know how vital memorizing exclusion limitations and other DOLLAR AMOUNTS are for the tax purposes of this exam? This seems damn near impossible!

Has anyone tried the 2011 REG becker final review? I am trying to decide if it is worth it for reg or any other part for that matter.
