REG Exam Composition

For those who have taken the exam, in your experience, is it mostly made up of law/regulation type questions, or is it more tax preparation heavy? I just started studying today using CPAExcel, and more than half of the book concentrates on ethics and business law.

Also, the exam is currently scheduled for July 31…is this enough time to study? I have a full time job and don’t usually get home until after 7:30 on weekdays. I’ll *try* to find around 15-20 hours a week to study (in case this info helps).

    Thanks in advance 🙂

The sims, which are all tax, are 40% of the exam. BLaw is 30% of the exam, which means roughly half of the MCQs will be BLaw and half will be Tax related.

I started REG review around 6/1and have my test scheduled for 7/6, so I think you have enough time, if you're disciplined about getting a couple hours in after work most nights.

I took REG on 5/28/15 and got a 73. I studied all the topics I got wrong or scored as weak. I retook REG today and NONE of those topics were on my exam. My retake exam looked NOTHING like the one I took in May. Questions were all different, SIMS were all different. I had to double check because I thought I must have accidentally signed up for the Guam exam. WTF.

    AUD - 77
    REG - 73, 80
    FAR - 69, 73, 79 and DONE!

The reg exam I took was also rediculous… Things on it were not covered in becker in detail. The info I needed for the sims is not in the becker book… I am pretty upset about this exam. Also I had one sim where I could t understand what it wanted me to do… I knew the concept but the directions were shotty.. Probably failed even though I felt good going in.

    My sims were a wreck

    FAR - 11/30/14 -79
    AUD - 2/19/15 -86
    BEC - 4/09/15 -86
    REG - 11/30/15 -87

    I'M DONE! ITS OVER! WOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

I used Becker too and even went through all the new lectures and SIMs and I didn't see it either.

How many different variations of the REG exam can there be?

    AUD - 77
    REG - 73, 80
    FAR - 69, 73, 79 and DONE!
    BEC - 82

    @OlintoJr

I feel like we probably had similar exams…I took REG yesterday and I felt really prepared after using becker and then the exam had multiple choice that becker hadn't focused on and a few of my SIMS were so random! I walked out feeling like I definitely failed, hopefully the questions that were crazy were pretest or else I'll probably be taking REG again.

I would say that there were an even amount of tax and business law questions, but it probably isn't like that for everyone. I would recommend knowing the business law stuff even though it's so boring. I'll be working in tax full-time so I thought REG would be a nice section to start with but I didn't realize how much of it isn't tax 🙁

Sh*t, sh*t, and sh*t. I hate REG!!! I thought I was a CPA and then REG came along with its crap! We have to study something that a computer can do for us.

REG exam has a ton of tax. The SIMs are completely full of tax questions. I keep telling people to get Gleim SIMs on-line. I used CPAexcel, and it was not enough even with Wiley TB and Ninja MCQ/SIMs. The SIMs for REG are harder than any other section, so study the SIMs. I passed BEC on the first try, and have failed REG 4 times. That should tell you, it's the SIMs…

REG was also the hardest exam for me. I passed everything with my first try. It took me two times to pass Reg. I studied two months on my first try and another two months on my retake. It took me four months to pass that test. And I have work experience on individual taxation. So Reg chapter 1 and chapter 2 were easy for me.

The MCQs on my first exam were very different from the second tests. On my retake, i don't recall seeing any INDIVIDUAL taxation questions on it. Due to the shorter test time frame and confusing AL, Reg stimulation is the hardest in my opinion. I used all of 1hour15mins on both exams for the sim.

@Last Chance CPA, so NINJA SIMS are not representative of the Reg Exam SIMS or there aren't enough to really practice? I typically have not studied SIMS but I know REG is totally different and since I hate taxes I figured I'd better make the SIMS a priority. I was thinking about practicing the SIMS in my Wiley book, Roger book and NINJA. Will that be enough or do you still recommend Gleim? Thanks!

Zumo76 – It may be enough but I needed more. SIMs are key for REG. I basically only studied SIMs week of exam for my 5th attempt. All SIM packages are good enough, but nothing mirrors the exam like Gleim online SIMs. If I pass this time around, it was because of Gleim SIMs. It gives you a great opportunity to learn the AL IRC, which you must try to use for this exam. I found two SIM answers in the AL. It also has the same look and feel for the SIMs. The materials you are using may suffice but for a 4x failure, I needed assurance…

    Last Chance CPA,

How are the Gleim MCQ compared to the other ones you have seen for REG?

    AUD - 77
    REG - 73, 80
    FAR - 69, 73, 79 and DONE!
    BEC - 82

@1coolkat – MCQs are much harder. Some questions are completely unnecessary because i believe they are not AICPA released questions. I think they over test you on material that won't show up on the exam. I can safely say that after 5x…

I would do Ninja and WTB with Gleim SIMs.
