    Hello,

I’m working through the Gross Income Test. I’m having a hard time understanding who can and cannot be claimed as a dependent. If a widowed parent has social security benefits of $4,000 and I paid over one-half of their support, why can’t I claim them? The parent is a U.S. citizen.

    Thanks!

You cannot count the widowed parents income……not sure what you are asking. To be a dependent the person must provide more than 50% of support and gross income is less than $3,900. The parent is of specific relationship and I assume lives with the taxpayer. Hope this helps
