REG question – AMT medical adjustment

Could someone help me understand the medical adjustment for calculating AMT? Becker says that a medical deduction is an adjustment for calculating AMT to the extent that it does not exceed 10% of AGI. However, that’s the same rule as for regular tax purposes, so why would it be adjusted for AMT? Can someone help me understand what I’m missing? Thanks!

Because if ur 65+ the deduction is 7.5% although I think that rule is outdated now.

The rule still is 7.5% of AGI if age 65 and older.

According to the IRS, the law is temporary (until Dec 31, 2016) where taxpayers age 65 and older can deduct medical expenses exceeding 7.5% of their AGI.

So I'm still confused as to what becker is talking about for the medical deduction decrease for AMT?

Another poorly written item by becker. In essence someone over 65 can deduct medical expenses above 7.5 percent. Amt allows u to not add back any deduction u took in excess of ten percent. Therefore for someone over 65, u have to aDd back the difference between 10 percent and 7.5 percent

If ur under 65, u r only allowed to deduct that which is above 10 percent. Amt also allows u to not do an addback for the amount above ten percent, therefore if ur under 65 there is no addback, only if ur ovr 65 will there b an addback and it will b for 10 – 7.5 percent
