REG Retake Review – Plan of Attack

It’s been awhile since I’ve taken an exam since I took time off for busy season. This is my third take on REG and it’s just so hard to know where I stand. I take the exam in a week and half. I’m not sure the best plan for review partially because I knocked the other three out before I started working full-time, and partially because there is just so much information. I relistened to all of Becker’s lectures and did all the MCQs and optional practice. I bought Ninja supplemental MCQs and have done a few (~500), but not until the last couple of days. Do you think it’s better for me to continue with Becker and redo all their MCQ’s and really know their memory tools or spend my week grinding through Ninja MCQ questions to really see the questions in a new way?

Also, any other last minute tips for REG? I am really struggling with REG like none of the others and not sure why, which is what frustrates me. On both my past two score reports I rank higher on ethics and individual tax, then mostly moderate on general tax legislation, lower in corporate/law/SIMs.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Good luck to the others out there studying!

Your score in July was almost there. So I would imagine that your preparation has been adequate. I personally think that passing has an element of luck to it. And by that I mean that you never know what may show up on your version of the exam.

The knowledge you had going in just barely missed out on a passing score. But it's entirely possible that if given the exam that another person received, that you may have got a 90+. The luck of the draw is real… Study hard over the next week and knock this test out. Then take a couple of months off, relax, and enjoy the spring. If you need a retake then pass it in the next testing window. Regardless, you'll be done soon.

Thanks for the encouragement. I hope so. On my retake, I only mainly focused on the poor areas. This time, I'm trying hard to study everything. When there is this much material, it's always had to know where you stand.

@CPAabc – I would suggest hammering out the Ninja MCQs. I really attribute my passing scores (on the three exams I've taken so far) to doing ridiculous amounts of MCQs. I am really not that great at accounting, but I consider myself to be a solid test taker. Continuing to do MCQs and understanding the answers will ultimately help you pick out the correct answers on the exam. I also agree that it is a bit the luck of the draw depending on the questions you are faced with on the exam. But doing enough MCQs will hopefully increase your likelihood of seeing similar ones on exam day. Best of luck…I hope the third time is the charm for you!

Great – thanks for the suggestions. I will try to do some SIMs this week. That's one of my struggles, is that the IRC is harder for me to meander than AL. I'll take some time to try to understand it this week.

@CPAabc – Someone on her gave a suggestion to “know every type of basis question inside and out”. I believe that was the biggest hurdle for me. Since this is tested so heavily on the exam and applies across all chapters it was huge in my success in passing this section.

Of course study all other sections/topics as well but I think this is the most important IMO.
