    I emailed Wiley to get the Q3 2014 updates for the books, and they sent me the link for BUYING the whole new set of books for $260. Not what I wanted! I replied and tried to explain better what I needed.

    Do the REG Ninja flashcards need to be updated? I bought them on the last $1 sale. I don't want to upload them to Brainscape if they will get an update soon. Or are they all concept based and don't need it?

    First post, but I've been lurking on this site for a few months. After receiving two failing grades, I plan on being active in this study group. Will try to retake REG early July.

    I've been using Wiley book and test bank, but will probably buy the Ninja test bank as a supplement.

    The wiley sales folks don't understand. Buying the 2014 book will not give you code for 2014. It will give you code for 2013 which is good only till 2014 2nd Qtr. You will need the wiley 2015 book which is not published yet I believe.

    A text book would be a good bet.

    *This is my 2nd attempt at the CPA exam. For all of you who have failed this exam many times, given up on it, or taken a break like me, remember that it is still possible to finish what you started...failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently šŸ™‚

    @CClapido – thank you for posting that!! I would have not included the NOL carryforward before calculating- I won't forget that now!

    Thanks, h0wdyus! I think I finally got her to understand at least part of what I was asking for, as she did send me a couple of Word docs with FAR errata and some REG regulation D updates. I responded that I really needed the Q3 2014 updated tax code, but that maybe those haven't been prepared yet. I haven't heard back.

    I don't understand how they can test us on something in Q3 that isn't released until June. Am I missing something?

    The REG Folks. I have a question on Casualty loss. Confused here. For Individuals 1) Casualty loss is part of NOL 2) Also Casualty loss is Itemized deduction subject to insurance claim ; $100 and excess of 10% of AGI.

    My question is how is the itemized deduction tied to NOL . Where are these items shown on 1040 and schedules. I understand that itemized deductions are in Sch A, so do we show the casualty loss with NOL and in Sched A ?

    I am totally in need of help here.

    @Kelestrel Honestly, I just wanted to study what I like best first! I just came out of a tax internship, so hopefully that will help. What about you?

    @h0wdy – I didn't know the answer to your question, so I did some googling and I'm going to take a stab at it. I found this which might help: https://www.irs.gov/publications/p536/ar02.html (IRS Publication 536). Itemized deductions go on Schedule A, which is used to calculate NOL. Casualty loss goes on Schedule A, but is also included in the calculation for NOL which ultimately shows up as a negative number on Other Income/Line 21 of the 1040. I don't know if that really answered your question, and I might be totally wrong – so if somebody else knows/can explain better please feel free!

    @halfoot

    thanks for looking into. You really validated my sanity. I thought i was going crazy. One thing is I think the NOL shows up on line 41 and not line 21 of 1040. Line 21 is other income such as lottery etc.

    I will read the document in a bit. I think will have to read the whole thing in detail. Thanks your help much appreciated.

    Any other suggestion from anyone are welcome.
