GOOD LUCK!!! Once you're done, let us know if it compared to your expectations.

I'm really hoping over the next 2 weeks I can make this stuff really stick. I'm not consistent with my MCQ results and that is worrisome. I have 2 weeks to hone it all, I guess.

ugghhhhhhh I just want to pass lol.

Hello everyone. I am studying individual taxation now. I am using 2014 becker textbook. Do I need to worry about some expired tax related deduction.? My textbook was printed in the beginning of 2014 so most tax related deduction is for 2013. Whenever the text says 2013 I do go online check the most recent tax law. I will continue to check IRS page but I do wonder if this is something that needs my time and attention. Does the Cpa exam question give you new phaseout amount and tell you whether the deduction is expired? Or not testing about the expired deduction at all? Thank you!

    Good luck @Terry!

@Amyam- same situation you are…2 weeks to do MCQs until my eyes fall out.

@icandoit you should be fine with the 2014 book. I wouldn't worry about the specific phaseouts

@icandoit In the becker online there is a link for updates I printed that off it had the updated phase outs and numbers and pages that changed… However, looking them up online might reinforce it a little more for you…..

Is this Wiley MCQ answer vs. the explanation off ? Or I'm not getting it. I did calculate and get the 37, 500 as explained, but that isn't one of the answer to select.

    Question 7:

    ITAX-0012

    Need a hint?See Reference…

Tim and Nicole Wendler were divorced in 2013. Under the terms of their divorce decree, Tim paid alimony to Nicole at the rate of $60,000 in 2013, $25,000 in 2014, and nothing in 2015. What amount of alimony recapture must be included in Tim's gross income for 2015?

    $0

    $10,000

    $35,000

    $47,500

This answer is correct. Alimony recapture may occur if alimony payments sharply decline in the second and third years that payments are made. The payor must report the recaptured alimony as gross income in the third year, and the payee is allowed a deduction for the same amount. Recapture for the second year occurs to the extent that the alimony paid in the second year ($25,000) exceeds the third year alimony by more than $15,000 ($0 + $15,000), or $10,000. Recapture for the first year occurs to the extent that the alimony paid in the first year ($60,000) exceeds the average alimony paid in the second year (reduced by the recapture for that year) and third year by more than $15,000. In this case, recapture for the first year amounts to $37,500, computed as follows:

    First year payment $60,000

    Second year payment $15,000

    Third year payment $ 0

    $15,000

÷ 2 (7,500) Average of second and third year payments

    (15,000) Threshold

    $37,500 Recapture for first year

During 2013, Mr. and Mrs. Benson provided substantially all the support, in their own home, for their son John, age twenty-six, and for Mrs. Benson’s cousin Nancy, age seventeen. John had $4,100 of income for 2013, and Nancy’s

income was $2,500. The Bensons paid the following medical expenses during the year:

    Medicines and drugs:

    For themselves $400

    For John 500

    For Nancy 100

    Doctors:

    For themselves 600

    For John 900

    For Nancy 200

What is the total amount of medical expenses (before application of any limitation rules), that would enter into the

calculation of itemized deductions on the Bensons’ 2013 tax return?

    a. $1,000

    b. $1,300

    c. $2,400

    d. $2,700

Why is the answer D and not B? John's gross income is more than 3,900 so the parents can't claim a dependency exemption… ?

Well I just finished, and hopefully I was able to earn my 75 points. First part ok, I marked off 9 to double check, lots of trick questions and details in those questions. part 2 and 3 all complicated questions, calculations, (saw someone post Multi-line questions), so hopefully that means they were the more difficult questions and that I did well on the first part to get there. SIM, were not too bad, 1 research question, few tricks here and there but i was able to look up and find in the IRC… All fill in the blank no drop downs. All calcs so spent a lot of time double checking formulas…

So as always you never know, its all up to the computer and whatever curve formulas they put on these things. Good luck with studies for those of you taking. I will check in once in a while but for now i need a break,,,

well at least you've sat for it – hopefully the wait will pass quickly for your grade. I think Gabe and I will be getting ours the same time as you so we can either toast, commiserate, or console together. 🙂

terry/gabe – do you have any insight for study prep for FAR/BEC that you would mind sharing after you recharge from REG? I can send my personal email address.

I'm good on audit – have passed it before. I'm the most worried a/b FAR since it's the only section I've never actually sat/studied for. I took BEC once and failed w/ a 71 but that was quite awhile ago. It's changed significantly since then.
