I am taking REG on October 4th. I already listened to all the becker lectures and did all the mcq. I am going back over all the notes I highlighted from the book and doing the simulations and mcqs again. Any tips, this is my first section.

I hate REG!!!!! Gahhhhhh. Retaking it mid October. I still have to sign up. For becker users. Do you suggest listening to lectures or reading the book?

I do lectures and read ONLY if I don't do well on the MCQ. I personally get so much out of the lectures because they really stress what is most important and what things are not as important. That is helpful to me because you can't possibly know or remember everything. And as much as I hate them, the cheesy mnemonics really help… especially Olinto's.

    Hey guys

So I'm back at REG again. I got my score this morning in CA, it said 73. I could not believe it, I studied by butt off this time and I was scoring well on all the MCQ questions. I swear I know this stuff. I did probably 1500 questions in the wiley test bank. And did all the Yaeger recommended questions in the Wiley book, at least twice. This was my second time taking it too. So, I have spent almost 6 months studying for REG…straight. I just remember in the test that there were a lot of goof ball questions that were not clear, and some of the sims were really unclear. My plan is to just treat this as a continuation of the studying I just did and hit taxation really hard.

    AUD - 81(5/29/13)
    BEC - 76(10/13/13)
    FAR - 70(4/1/13), 68(7/2/13), 81(2/28/14)
    REG - 65(5/30/14), 73(8/31/14), 83(10/8/14) DONE!!!

    Hi everyone!

I've been at these exams for a while and i feel like this study group might help me with my depleting motivation.. I'm currently using an older Roger CPA book as an outline of how I take my notes using updated information from another CPA program I found called CAS CPA. Not sure if any of you will really know of this program since it is really small.

I took REG twice and I think I need to change the way I study so I'm basically writing my notes as if it's the first time I'm seeing the material. I should be finished with note taking by the end of this week. Just wondering what would be the best way to tackle the exam this time around? Just MCQs over and over and over again?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!!

@jferguson I totally agree! So confused with the sims. I feel like the instructions were unclear! Gotta study again:(

Just signing in. Taking REG again in November. Not starting my studies for 2 more weeks because we're going on vacation next week. It was supposed to be a celebration trip for being done with this exam. 🙁 I have forgotten everything I learned in Q3 and am starting from scratch. I guess I'll watch the lectures this time or read the book. Not sure which yet. Maybe both. Dreading studying again. Ready to be done. Hey Amay and Jferguson! Sorry to see you guys in Q4, but hopefully we'll all nail it this time and be done with stupid taxes and blaw and the CPA exam FOREVER!!

@CPA8488 – this is off of the website…

NEW – Improvements to your Regulation Course

    05/05/2014

On May 5th we released the V1.1 Regulation course, which includes the 2014 tax numbers (testable beginning 7/1), the new IRS Repair Regulations, and various errata corrections.

If you plan to take the Regulation exam on or after July 1, 2014, you should study using the updated V1.1 Regulation materials. If you currently have a V1.0 Regulation textbook and need to study the V1.1 REG content, you have two options: 1) Go to our course update page to see a summary of changes included in the V1.1 Regulation textbook, or 2) you may purchase a V1.1 Regulation textbook for a nominal fee.

If you plan to take the Regulation exam in May, you should listen to the updated R1-R4 lectures while using your V1.0 textbook (which contains the 2013 tax numbers that are testable through May 31st). Just ignore the fact that the textbook in your software will be showing the 2014 tax numbers. Our lecturer actually does not mention year-specific amounts in his lectures because the REG exam focuses on tax principles and does not test heavily on year-specific amounts. So, with the updated software and your V1.0 textbook, you will be fully prepared!

In Year 1, Kane's residence had an adjusted basis of $250,000 and it was destroyed by a tornado. An appraiser valued the decline in market value at $425,000. Later that same year, Kane received $200,000 from his insurance company for the property loss and did not elect to deduct the casualty loss in an earlier year. Kane's Year 1 adjusted gross income was $100,000 and he did not have any casualty gains.

What total amount can Kane deduct as a Year 1 itemized deduction for casualty loss, after the application of the threshold limitations?

For the sentence that says: did not elect to deduct the casualty loss in an earlier year

Is this applicable to solving the problem? I completely ignored it and still solved it correctly. what if he had elected to deduct the casualty loss in an earlier year? (If this occured in year one, how can you elect to deduct it in an earlier year if it didn't happen yet?)
