All,
I used Becker for the first 5 times I took the exam and continued to score right around passing. Switched to Yaeger for the retake of Reg last testing window and got a 95. Listen to Phil's DVDs and study EXACTLY what he says. He will emphasize certain topics and make sure you know those cold if he stresses those topic areas. If he does not cover it, do not worry about it. Put the trust in the review course and do everything they say. I would suggest a heavy study schedule for 4 weeks and take the exam. Good luck to all.
AUD- 74, 82 BEC 82 FAR 77 REG 70, 95.
I am studying reg now, finished all lectures and mc. I am going back over the business law and ethics sections then switching back to tax review using jeff's notes as a supplement. I will then do both becker final exams, and supplement it with cpareviewforfree.com. This is my last test So I will study like no other to finish and be DONE!!
Gluck to all!!
I am taking REG on July 23. I'm using Becker and just finished up the lectures this week. I am planning on spending the next 4 weeks going over Jeff's tax notes and doing a ton of mcq. I also found today that I failed Audit so I'll be studying for that exam on july 24.
BEC 77; FAR 81; Audit 70, TBD; REG 7/23
I'm not digging this REG stuff at all. I have spent the last two weeks doing nothing.. because the law sections have really discouraged me. I am through lessons 6 of 20 and taking the exam July 24. Lots to do in 4 weeks. I'm thinking about skipping to tax because I think I'll have a better grasp of it, then go back and finish up law then back around to review tax and that should be it. YIKES.
After missing the grade for AUD (72) and BEC (67) I too am finding it hard to get motivated for the REG exam on July 9th!! I keep telling myself though, there is no way that I am going to not pass 1 of these on the first try and I just need to get my butt in gear and figure it out!! I too agree though that the business law section for this one is more indept then I remember them teaching in school, although at that point I didn't think I would ever sit for the CPA exam... Go figure huh?
I am using Gleim and the outlines are in really technical terms. Lots of latin and things I have to ultimately google and/or consult my lawyer friend. Its really hard to focus on this stuff. That's why I think I'll move on to tax because I can at least understand that stuff. Here's to hoping for the best and toughing it out, as usual..
Wendy - keep at it. You're not far off!
Lisa
Lisa, thanks for the word of encouragement. It's easy to get off track in this journey it seems!! I too agree the business law has a lot of terms that I have never heard or blocked out during that course!! Best of luck to you on the exam!!
Lol. I've been using material from three review courses (Becker books, Gleim Books and Test Prep CD, and Yaeger Home Study). I've FINALLY grasped the concept that the first thing I have to embrace is that there are a thousand things I'd rather be doing with my time so I'm not going to truly enjoy any of these courses. I got bored with Phil during taxes, got a little discouraged and wasted about two weeks then switched to my Gleim book and finished up the tax material. For me tax is soooo boring that I would tune out during the lectures and and I'd have to end up reading the book anyway. Since I prefer the way Gleim book is laid out, I just went ahead and endured that torture instead. I think it was successful, I have a pretty good grasp and LOTS of notes to go over. Then when I started reviewing the Ethics and Professional Responsibilities stuff in Gleim.... my eyes were rolling over the pages very slowly but nothing was sticking. So, rather than waste an entire day or two weeks. I decided to stop and review the yaeger lectures. At least they cover it in two hours. I have no intention of reading the chapters in the book so, I hope they do a good job...
I am not feeling overjoyed about this. Taking it 7/2, and I studied everything over and over, and I tried the practice exam, and scored a 66, 50, and 70 on each testlet. That has discouraged me and I can't seem to get out of the rut. It seems I covered every topic to where I am familiar with the material, but don't have enough mastery of the material. I feel like with less than a week to go, I should ignore certain topics (documents of title, real property, and antitrust law) and focus on agency, bankruptcy, and of course EVERY tax topic. Not sure what is the best thing to do at this point. I am using Becker materials. It helped me pass two exams already, but I am not feeling REG. Perhaps do homework over and over? Any last minute advice?
@futurelacpa... I take it this Friday as well. I've been through all the lectures and I'm just now going back through the chapters to start reviewing and start the MCQ. I'm so scared of taxes to the point that I've put it off until now to start reviewing. I would say given my past experience with Becker, if you're doing in that score range of the practice exams, you'll done fine on the actual exam. Becker is also more difficult than the actual exam.
Hopefully I'll have the courage and time to finally face my fear of taxes and get this exam over with this week! Good luck!
I haven't gotten to tax yet, but maybe Jeff's review notes would help. I don't know much about them but for 25 bucks, it may be worth it! If I struggle with the tax section I'll probably buy them. It certainly wouldn't hurt.
Good luck to both of you - let us know how it goes!!
Lisa
Wow, Cpareviewforfree.com is money! I am doing the business law questions for reg right now and they seem very similar to the type of questions that I have seen on my prior 3 tests. This is excellent I would defiantly recommend going through these while studying for reg. I think I may have done better on bec had I know about this then!
Just applied for NTS to take it in mid - late July. Becker expired but I have Yaeger 2010. Some serious "pulling myself together" needs to be done...
Anna. Study, study, study and study some more this is your last one!! Do mc over and over it helps the information sink in and look at cpareviewforfree.com its awesome. Purchase Jeff's taxes notes as well they are helping me.
Thanks Jason. I am just so lazy for this exam.
I take Reg on 7/6 and it is my last one! :) It is so exciting to think that I could be completely done studying in 8 days.
Everyone else on their Monday night cram session? I just took a practice test on R1 for Becker and got a 90... The bad side is that it took me re-writing basically the WHOLE chapter by hand to get that high... Guess since it worked though I will be getting more written exercise tonight!! Good luck studying tonight everyone!!
@ Wendy - I just rewrote 13 pages of notes on Becker's chapter 1. It's going to be a long week! I feel your pain:-)
BEC 77; FAR 81; AUD 70 (TBD Aug); REG 7/23
Hi all - retaking on 7/9..failed with a 73 on first try. I am also very discouraged since I already took AUD, REG, and FAR and did not pass any of them. I use Becker but am very disappointed in the material. I rewrote all the notes and now I am just banging out the MCQ until it sticks....
Any advise what else to do? I really need to get some sort of accomplishment from the last 7 months of studying and start seeing a passing score.
Magster, all I can say is keep at it. If you got a 73 it means you know the material pretty well. You are very close. Just study like you did the first time, hit the areas you scored low on, and do as many multiple choice questions as possible. This test is by no means easy. There are people who never failed a test in their lives who struggle with this test. You keep at, you'll eventually pass this thing. The only way you fail this test is if you quit trying.
For anyone that already took this is there more tax or law on the exam? I am doing fine with the tax, but the law is out of control. I understand the concepts but I just know the exam will be crazy for this part. Cpawreviewforfree.com is defiantly helping with the law though.....
Jason, people have been saying it can be close to 50/50 with law/ethics and tax. I hate the law stuff, too, and I'm struggling with it myself.
Lisa
Good luck all.
Taking REG 7/27....
Anyone else heard of the Enrolled Agent exam? I came across a PWC job stated:
Requirements "...Certified Public Accountant [or commitment to pass CPA exam before being promoted to Manager and thereafter obtain CPA licensure], Enrolled Agent or Member of the Bar required."
The EA cert is utilized mainly by non-CPA tax preparers, but it seems to be a valued certification. Its affordable and a natural extension from REG studying. The exam is offered by Prometric, has three sections costing $101 each, then an application fee of $125. No NTS drama- just pay online and schedule. From reading the candidate bulletin its basically the tax portions of REG, but covered in more detail.
Found a relevant thread here on another71: http://www.another71.com/cpa-exam-forum/topic/anyone-studying-for-the-enrolled-agent-test#post-34371
This may be a good option for us job seekers to stay competitive!
Jason - for my REG exam, the advice i would give to you is that, if you are solid with the tax chapters and know a little bit of the law i would say you are in good shape. i posted somewhere else on this forum that i definitely felt that 90% of my REG questions were tax. I spent an equal amount of time learning both tax and law. law was for the most part easy for me, it made sense. tax, it just seemed like there was so much of it to learn so i did the best i could. obviously it wasnt good enough but next time around, while i will make sure i know most of the law topics... i am going to KILL the tax chapters :-D
Bryn333, thanks for advice!! I really appreciate it. I remember reading a while ago that the simulations are only on tax subjects and not law. Is there any truth to this?
I am money with the tax so if that is most of the exam then I'm hoping I'll be ok. I know some of the law and the becker questions are not that bad. But from previous experience with other exams, I am expecting the law questions to be super hard on the exam.
Yeah HoosierDaddy I am an Enrolled Agent. Your right about the detail. The depth of the questions are harder then the CPA exam, at least on the parts I have taken, just my opinion. I took the EA test both ways computer and all written and passed both ways. The first time I took it you could not even have a calculator and it was taken in a 2 day period at a IRS office and it took almost a year to get your score. And it was only offered 1 time a year around September. It was no easier on the computer. I think a lot of people think the EA test is very easy, but it has a very high fail rate too. The problem with the EA designation is hardley anyone knows what it means. That is why I decided to pursue the CPA, which I have passed Audit and BEC, I am taken FAR Aug 31. I have also taken and passed the CFE exam.
About two weeks until I test, 7/12. I just found out I passed the AUD portion last week so I am pretty excited since it was my first one and now I feel that I have a pretty good study approach down. I am taking Becker live courses, and am fortunate enough to remember a lot just from going to class. For AUD, I didn't really go back and read much, but did almost every MCQ that I could. I think if you do enough MCQ, from whatever source, you eventually start seeing a pattern; I even had 3-4 questions on my exam that were the same as in my becker MCQ's.
Good luck to all! I too have heard from others, and becker instructors, that tax is emphasized a lot more than Blaw. One of my instrustors said that there has not been a simulation based on Blaw to date. Can anyone abck this up?
Thanks!
Patrick,
that approach works perfect for audit that's pretty much what I did. But it does not work for the rest. There is no pattern on the other exams and the questions are a lot harder on BEC,FAR and REG (assuming haven't taken it yet). I would read through the book and do MC for the rest. I've also supplemented my REG with jeffs tax notes as well as cpareviewforfree.com we will see how I do! Defiantly should of used that site for BEC, because barely anything from becker was on there, but oh well I passed anyway, just barely lol.
Thanks for the advice Jason. I happen to work in public accounting in tax, so fortunately the tax side of REG is pretty straight forward to me. So far on my first pass through the becker MCQ's I have scored above 90 on each portion. The blaw is more just memorizing, and luckily it hasn't been too long since my blaw course in college. Good luck to you on your exam.
