I am curious to know if anyone has ever, or knows someone who was rejected by their state board when they applied?

I had 3 years in private and 2 months ago, before knowing if i am going to pass my final exam ( 5/5/2016) i started my own accounting practice. I was an accounting manager and my tasks included financial analysis, cost accounting. I reported to the CFO ($20M manufacturing co.) My boss is not a CPA but has a CFO background with many big companies. I just want to make sure that my experience is going to be enough..

Depending on what state you are in, the experience may be required to be signed off by an active CPA. You may want to verify this with your state board.

CA CPA - est. Dec 2016

    FAR - 80
    AUD - 82
    BEC - 80
    REG - 85

    ETHICS - 90
    EXPERIENCE - COMPLETE

Check with your state board. My boss isn't a CPA and I am in private, so I called my state board (Tennessee) and asked about this. I have to have my experienced signed off on by a licensed CPA, though not one that you are under supervision of, just one that can attest you have done appropriate accounting work.

Depends on the state. In MA you have to work in public or have a master's. There's a very small loophole but I have similar experience as yours and still had to get a master's.

Definitely varies by state. If you were continuing to work in private, I'd say you could get licensed in a different state if your state's rules wouldn't allow your experience to count; however, since you've started your own practice, you will need to be a licensed CPA in your state to be able to hold yourself out as offering CPA services.

In KY, you don't have to work for or under the supervision of a CPA, but merely have a CPA sign off on it. Since I live and work in KY, I had a CPA whose firm was a neighbor to the non-CPA firm that I worked at sign off on my experience (the firm I worked at did taxes and bookkeeping, but no auditing, and didn't have any CPAs). Virginia, if I remember correctly, doesn't require a CPA signature at all, but just a supervisor signature. Other states require public experience under a CPA, or like mla mentioned with MA, may allow additional education to substitute. So, there's lots of options.

Thanks all! I called WI and they stated that you don't need a CPA to sign of on it.
