I am an international candidate, and I have 4 years work experience & 3 years internship experience. How do I put that in my resume? Can I add them both and say 7 years work experience or how is that viewed here in the USA? Help pls ! Btw, all my work experience is in Finance/audit area.

@Mayo, I am just trying to update my resume to come up with a basic format, which I will then have to tweak in depending on the kind of jobs I am applying to. On a high level, I am looking for corporate finance kind of roles.

I'm assuming you have an undergrad? In which case, once you've been working for a few years, employers rarely look at your internship experience. You could leave it on if you want, but in general, most resumes that I review have no internships listed.

Agreed. After 3-4 years experience you should have enough experience to highlight your skillset. Ive seen all kinds of things like college achivements, SAT/GMAT scores..even “Passed all 4 CPA exams with scores in the 80s”. Not that those things arent accomplishments, but they arent the kind of accomplishments that people are looking for out of an experienced candidate. When I see stuff like that on a resume from a candidate who has 3-4 years experience I think “yup they didn't do enough in their experience so they need fluff and filler”. With only one position it might still make sense, once you have two jobs + though, your work experience section should begin with your first professional job out of school…

Agreed, the only reason I thought it would add any weight to my resume is to give a multidimensional touch to my experience. From an internship at an audit firm to a corporate finance job. I just like to highlight that I have seen almost all different forms of business organizations. And since my work experience is not in the US, I thought that might help the prospective employers to understand my profile better.

They will ask for your story in the interview. The point you are trying to make is a good one and best left face to face. Good luck!
