Generally people are pretty reluctant to discuss their salaries. I would certainly never with anybody except my boss and/or my spouse.

You could try a website like salary.com or glassdoor.com.

    LOL, post of the day!

    What about non-disclosure agreement?

Perhaps some companies do not have those, but even if that, who would post this info here?!!!!!

    @mla, good advice.

Didn't realize people's reactions would be so negative. I was googling and saw other salary post on this forum but they were a few years old. I wasn't asking for people's name or their employer's names. Seem pretty similar to glassdoor, etc.

Here is another thread. I would never post mine because I live in a smaller city, someone could figure out where I live!

Also, try Robert Half's salary guide. I may use that for my ask for a raise conversation after I get licensed.

There was nothing at all negative about my response, except that it wasn't what you wanted to see.

And regardless of asking for names/employer names there is much information that can be put together by using google searches etc. If I put down my salary per year it wouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who I am anyway based on my ip address, etc.

A new account start asking people for salary info 5 minutes after the account was created. When people don't feel comfort sharing, s/he starts complaining. Interesting. Why don't you start sharing your salary info first to encourage others?

If you don't want to share, don't comment. I don't post/come into these boards unless I need to know something specific. Obviously based on my google search and the link shared in this post, this isn't the first time a question regarding this topic has been posted.

The same can be said for if you don't like the responses, don't acknowledge them. Public message board, will get opinions whether or not they are wanted. Seems like you're looking to stir a pot. If you see replies that rub you the wrong way, move on to other replies that you prefer. Problem solved.

People are so annoying about salaries lol. Nobody even knows who you are.

Big 4 IT Audit Staff starting this year:

Offer was 54k base, 3k signing bonus, 5k CPA exam bonus

    🙂

Such a taboo subject. I wish more people would help out as I had very similar questions going into my full time job– I don't mind helping someone out. Good karma. 🙂

Big 4 salaries depend on what practice you choose (Tax, Audit, Advisory). For IT Audit I've heard of offers similar to @mypetmeatball (can't believe I just wrote that out–cool username!) minus the signing bonus. If the firms are desperate they may throw in a signing bonus. Keep an eye out for that because it could mean they are short-staffed and you will be drained.

I personally started in Big 4 Advisory at $49k. I got $1000 worth of performance bonuses throughout the year, $1000 for a different certification, and the potential for $5k bonus upon passing the CPA exam (this is within the first year of employment–otherwise it is $3k after that). At performance year end, I got a 10% raise (which is the highest they gave out in the state) along with a $3,000 bonus. I quit shortly after that–not quite worth the long hours and travel. Lasted a year and two months at Big 4. They are still asking me to go back. 🙂

I was then hired at a small private company for $65k plus $1k signing bonus. The Big 4 experience pays off but I do have a graduate education and other certifications that were applicable to my current job.

PLEASE keep in mind that some of the bonuses you get with the big 4 have a “repayment” agreement–that means if you leave within a certain amount of time (usually one year) after getting the bonus, you have to repay it.

I think that the likelihood to share a salary depends somewhat on whether the salary would've been the same for anyone else in your position or if you suspect that yours was more than others. For example, when I worked as a cashier, I was paid $7.25/hr starting out cause that was minimum wage and everyone else was paid the same starting out; no need to keep it quiet. Now, I'm the only person in my position at my company and did negotiate in getting the job (though I suck at negotiation so probably my boss is the one who got a good deal out of it), so presume I'm paid more than those below me and less than those above me. If I said what I made, and any coworkers saw it, they might be upset that I made too much more than them or too little less (like, a senior employee could think they should make more of a bonus over me, and a lower-level could think they shouldn't make that much less). So, a B4 employee that starts out at the same wage as all other 1st-year employees would, I'd think, be quite free in sharing their salary, whereas someone (more likely in industry) whose wage varies would be more hesitant.

The one wage I have stated freely on here was my starting wage in public accounting to demonstrate how much lower wages are here and how bad it was: I was paid $8/hr with my degree, before starting the exams, in a 2-person accounting firm as a do-everything person. Didn't even have an official title. I got a small raise during tax season and left there after about a year for a significant raise switching to an AR clerk job.
