Scheduling CPA Exam with Prometric

    Hi all,

I did a lot of digging and couldn’t find where any one asked, “Can you schedule your CPA Exam with Prometric the day before you plan to take it?”

Has anyone tried? The website looks like it will let me. If you have to know, I just wanted to be sure I was ready to sit before I scheduled the exam. Also, one more thing. I live the the DC, MD, VA area. I just found out you are supposed to take your exam in the state in which you applied. Whaaaat?!!!! Around here, the state lines are so close so you forget that although a place is only ten minutes from your house, it’s in another state. How difficult is it to transfer scores from state to state? I applied in VA, but there is only one test center in VA in this area! There is one in DC (where I would have preferred to test) and like five in MD.

    How annoying!!!

So, in summary, 1) has anyone attempted to schedule their exam in less than five days prior to the exam, and 2) has anyone attempted to transfer scores across states? Do you have to apply to the state board first?

Ah! Finally found an answer to one of my questions! If anyone else was wondering the same, here is the answer to my testing center location question, as shown on http://www.nasba.org/exams/cpaexam/examfaq

–Q: May I take the examination outside of my jurisdiction?

–A: Yes, You may schedule your examination at any Prometric site in any of the 54 jurisdictions. You do not have to sit in the same state where you applied.

Yaaaay!!! That's great news! Now, still up in the air: If Prometric has seats open, can you schedule your CPA exam in less the recommended five/six days? (NASBA says five, AICPA says six)?

If you can work it with Prometric then I'm sure it's fine. However, in my experience finding an open date for the next day has never happened. Then again, I always scheduled mine for the last day of the window so maybe that's why. 🙂

I have successfully rescheduled my exam the day before it was scheduled and I have seen others here also. You are supposed to do it 24 hours in advance so if your exam is scheduled for early morning then you may not be able to, although I think I heard of one person who was able to do it after the 24 hr mark. Also it costs about $87 or so when you wait that late. If it is late in the test window you may have a hard time finding an open seat though. In my case I stalked the prometric site for several days and the day before my exam a spot opened up for on the last day of the window.

Sorry, I just re-read your post and see that you were asking about scheduling it the day before. my post is about rescheduling it to a later date on the day before I was already scheduled to take it.

Hi guys, thanks for your input. Yes, fortunately, there are spots left within 24 hours at multiple locations here in DC/MD/VA. Availability actually changes pretty frequently, so I'm thinking maybe a few people make last minute reschedules. Also, as you pointed out, this is the beginning of the test window, so the odds may be in my favor. I just ended up booking it for Friday, five days in advance as stated in the Candidate Bulletin. I'd hate to give them any reason to negate my scores.

The floor still stands open, however, if anyone has tried scheduling (not rescheduling) their exam less than the required five days as stated in the Candidate Bulletin and would like to share their experience.

I contacted my state Board of Accountancy with my questions before I posted here. Today, they wrote back to me and confirmed that I can sit for the exam in any jurisdiction, and that if a spot is available, then yes, I can register as late as the day before with Prometric. I hope this doesn't encourage anyone to wait until the last minute, however, because the worst thing you want to happen to you is that you study with a date in mind and can't find an appointment to sit anywhere near that date, or even in that testing window. So I caution you, and recommend that you register at least the 45 recommended days in advance.

    Happy studying everyone!

I wish this was more widely known info. I about had a meltdown when I first started this process because I lived in Texas but only met the experience requirements in my home state, VA. So I had it all planned out when I was going to drive home to take the tests, taking two at once, etc. Talk about a nightmare. Thankfully, I found this forum and people told me I was nuts and I could take my test at any Prometric site in the country and it'd still apply to VA. Glad you found it out, too!

    BEC: (4/2012) 88
    AUD: (5/2012) 91
    REG: (8/2012) 82
    FAR: (1/2013) 78 🙂

    Hey Keely!

Good thing you found out! Driving the 10+ hours from TX to VA would have been a terrible precursor to taking two CPA exams. Looks like we're both waiting on scores that come out Feb 5. I wish you the best!
