Science of studying

I was doing a bit of research on how to retain information better & a few things i found were:

That its best to study before going to bed, unless you’re physically or mentally overtired. freshly learned material is better remembered after a period of sleep than after an equal period of daytime activity because retroactive interference takes place. However, for some people this may not work. btw retroactive interference is basically forgetting caused by later learning

Also learned that there should be rest periods at intervals to allow the brain to lie fallow. Continuous undifferentiated activities apparently fight for a place in the memory; some things are pushed out and forgotten. Ive personally noticed that its ineffective to jump right into a new topic right after completing a completely different one

& that the best time to review is right after studying something, to create conflicts, do problems & remember why made the mistake. its good to see the material you learned in another context, since the problems we see on the test & real life aren’t structured the way they are in the textbook

Those were my biggest takeaways, & yes i copied nd pasted a bit from the internet.

well, I wish I read this 2 days ago. I just crammed 10 aud chapters in 2 days going through hundreds or thousands of MC. But it is review for me as I have failed my first attempt.

I always had an intention to read about this kindda stuff, also on strategies to sit MC tests etc but never get around to it. Thanks for sharing

I think the best way to study is early and often, and make sure you have some kind of review before going to bed.

In the perfect world, maybe a weekend strategy.

    Wake up 7am

    Study 8 – 10am

    break

    Study 11 – 1pm

    break

    study 6-7pm

    break

    review that days notes 10-11pm

That's 6 hours of studying but broken into more manageable pieces. You could add more or take away either or, but regardless there are plenty of breaks and a good review session before bed to try and reinforce the days topics.

According to CPAExcel: no marathon study sessions. Your ability to retain information diminishes after 90 minutes. For this purpose, Jeff's ELL (Early / Before Work, Lunch, and Late / After Work) program works well. You're studying 3 or so hours a day, but its so broken up you're never studying more than 90 minutes. After I adopted this rule it was a gamechanger for me!
