The City of Rancho Cucamonga has a position open for “Account Clerk”. Closing date is 10/30/2014.

Thanks Swurm I applied in a city job before and they have 350 applicants for one job, and they usually have somebody to hire already but I'll try again

In a more populated area, you'll find that a lot of jobs have 350 applicants per position, but they have more positions, so it's a trade-off. In my area, the last accounting clerk job I saw posted as a little over a year ago (I know the date pretty well, because it's the job I have now 🙂 ) – in the time since then, I've seen 2 Staff Accountant jobs too far away to drive to, 1 state entry-level job, and 3 Controller positions. Each of these positions probably had about 5-12 applicants, so the chances per position were better, but fewer positions. In Riverside, you've got 350 applicants per position, but more than 1 Clerk position per year…so it's all a trade-off. In Riverside, you've got to apply to everything you see that you've got a half a chance of getting, and then out of all of them, you'll be one of the lucky 10 out of 350 that get an interview a few times, and then someday the lucky 1 out of 350 that get hired.

Thanks Lilla but let me tell you something about the market here I'll say 70% of the jobs if not more they have already somebody for the position but the have to advertise for it anyway it's basically who you know, as simple as that.

I've lived in many areas and business environments, from big (just outside LA) to where I am now (population of 3,000), so I've seen the whole range of how much “who you know” impacts things. Where I am now is particularly bad for who you know being the sole deciding factor. For example, I have a Bachelor's and CPA. If I applied to an accounting job and someone with a personal recommendation but no accounting education at all applied to the job, the person with no education would get the job, hands-down. What I said still holds true, though – you've got to just apply to all of them so that you get that 30% which is truly open. It's not fun (I hate applying to jobs TBH), but it's the only way if you don't know someone.

What's your background? Do you have a BS? Do you have any office related experience?

    MBA,CMA,CPA, CFF?, ABV?

I live in So Cal; I don't know anyone hiring for a clerk. But I can give advice based on my experience.

Be willing to commute. Don't limit yourself to Riverside and San Bernadino.

I work in the Valley, and I work with people who live all over. OC, Redondo, Palmdale, etc…

I think you are doing yourself a disservice by limiting your location.

BTW, I moved to CA not knowing a single person. I found work. So I'm sure you'll be fine.

    Good luck!

@ How many letters do you need: Yes I have BSBA BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION and I have a lot of office experience but not as an accounting clerk I worked years in the Mortgage Industry and few years in sales, may be when they see my resume they think I am overqualified to apply for an Accounting Clerk

@ Lilla I Have been applying for a year now but no luck , that's why now I am asking if anybody knows somebody.

@ liss_ will_be_a_CA_CPA I love driving but you can consider me a single dad with 2 Kids the reason I am applying near were I live because My kids daycare will close at 6 PM and most jobs ends at 5 PM so by the time I finish I can pick them up as I have nobody to help me with the kids at all, so if i commuted far I will not be able to pick up the kids on time and you know the commute in LA can take you almost 2 hours to get back home in traffic.

It is hard to get into government jobs without any kind of connection or knowing someone from inside. As far as I know, Riverside County has a temp employee program, and whenever the county needs to hire accounting assistants, they will look from the temp employee program first. Maybe San Bernardino has something similar.

I understand you are frustrated, but it seems like you are unwilling to take anyones suggestions. I volunteer on a crisis hotline, and I have seen the same thing on there. Just turning down every idea without much thought. I do not live in your area, but I think that some people have given good tips here. Also you really need to not lose faith. Keep applying to everything and then eventually you will get something. Also if possible volunteer some to keep your resume fresh. Good Luck and try to stay positive!
