Seriously, what do REG sims have against the test taker?

Took the exam yesterday. This was my 2nd take and it is the last exam I need. If I don’t pass this 2nd take, I’ll have to take FAR again. I just don’t understand why they make the REG sims so challenging. It also does not help that the Tax Code is complete garbage in helping to look anything up. For FAR and AUD I could find some general information in the material, but with REG? No, we aren’t allowed to have that either.

I got 2 research sims out of the 6 total, and I know for sure I aced those and 1 other sim. The other 3 were just brutal.

So done with this stupid exam. Hope that was the last time ever. Fingers crossed.

    FAR: 11/21/13: 84 PASSED
    AUD: 08/29/14: 52 11/26/14: 84 PASSED
    BEC: 01/24/15: 75 PASSED
    REG: 02/28/15: 65 05/20/15: 82 PASSED

    I. AM. DONE!

I totally agree. I took REG today. MCQs were alright, although I had uncertainties but SIMs were really challenging. For me the worst part about sims was that there were no drop down menus to choose the numbers when calculations were required. At least with drop downs you can have a lucky guess. But what are the chances when I have to enter all the amount on my own (sometimes I had no clue what I was doing šŸ™ ) And IRC…deserves special attention. I wonder how people who work in tax use it. I only had 1 research. I had 15 minutes left and tried to verify a few of my answers in IRC. Sadly, couldn't find a thing.

I hope you passed. I can imagine how you feel. Even though it was my first try, I wouldn't wanna see REG material again.

IRC is trash. In the real world publications are WAY more useful than the code (even if they aren't a “primary” source). Knew one old-timer that used to quote code sections and actually used it but he was some kine of freak-genius.

Your posts are kind of freaking me out…CTM I can totally relate to your situation. If I dont clear my REG (which is a last paper for me) than my FAR credit will expire in August. I am so done with this process, even though haven't took REG yet, this is my first attempt to sit for this 1, but I am tired, doesn't want to see this book again.

Between, which review materials you guys used for REG?

I hope all of us pass..good luck..

    FAR: You are down...
    Aud: Surprised me...Thanks
    BEC: 75% work done

It took me two times to pass REG. Both times I saw questions that made me feel sorry for people that haven't had tax experience (I have tax experience).

I scored Stronger in Reg Sims. Honestly, when I saw the sims, I was pretty happy.

Research I found within a minute and the rest of the sims (save for 1, which I think was pretest) were on areas that Becker mentioned were important and needless to say, I was familiar with. Overall, the IRC helped me on 2.5 of the sims. Without it, I wouldn't have been able to score that high in Sims.

Maybe I just got lucky, but I doubt it. I spent a lot of time searching within the IRC and was able to find the answers I was looking for. I didn't search for just 1 or 2 minutes either, I was persistent and it paid off big for me. I had the same experience with FAR. The AL was extremely important for me and I was able to score Stronger in Sims for that test as well.

In both cases, I was able to find the answers word-for-word in the IRC and AL.

@No_one: Don't stress it. Do your best and hope for the best. Look on the bright side, if you do not pass you can take it at least one more time before your FAR credit expires in August. I'm sure you will pass one of the times.

@Club300: Glad you were able to utilize the IRC so well. The problem I run into is that the IRC doesn't really give examples or a good overview of the topic. It goes into all this legalese on each topic. I found the AL to be much easier to work with.

Also, I don't mean to scare anyone. We have many CPAs so it is definitely a passable section. Study hard and kick some butt! I just wanted to vent about how much I despise the sims on this section.

I have one more chance before FAR expires, and I have failed REG 4 times! I am getting really worried because I think I am done (in a bad way). I am afraid I won't be able to use the IRC for SIMs and will fail again. I used the AL for AUD and found answers word for word, but haven't been able to have the same luck with REG like Club 300.

@Farhan1426 Bless your heart……I am trying to get a good trend on the mcq's so I probably won't have a chance with the sims…:-(, I know you're not trying to scare anyone, but I am scared anyway. Maybe even looking for a reason to chicken out til july……ughhh decisions decisions……back to studying.

@23K – First 3 attempts, I used a combination of CPAExcel, WTB, Ninja Audio, Notes, and MCQs. Attempt #4 – I am using Gleim test bank w/book. I scored 66, 62, 65, and 69 previously. I finally upped my strengths this last time around, so I am hoping I can get those 6 extra points with Gleim. Good luck on REG. I think I saw on another post that you will lose credit for FAR if you fail REG?

I totally agree. I went into the SIMS feeling great about MCQs. The testlets kept getting harder and I felt very confident. SIMS totally crushed me and as you can see I didn't have much of a cushion. They were just brutal. Good luck on score release day.

The reason they make the sims hard is to protect the credential.

    BEC 87 Feb 14
    REG 84 Apr 14
    FAR 82 Nov 14
    AUD 86 Feb 15

    Thanks for the reply.

I will lose Audit if I don't pass Regulation by 08/08/15.

Currently I'm using Roger CPA review, Ninja MCS, and Ninja Notes & Ninja Audio.
