Difficult living situation! Should I accept PwC offer?

PwC Atlanta just offered me a position and I am from Michigan. The issue is that my parents are currently living with me and moving them to Atlanta would be difficult. We migrated to the US in 2011 and they have just finally settled down here in MI. I am worried that it is difficult for them to move again. I think I may be able to get a cheap apartment in Atlanta while paying for their rent here in Michigan at the same time. My mom works minimum wage and my dad is unemployed.

In terms of salary, PwC offered me the same salary as what I am currently earning as a FA in FP&A.

Additionally, I had a phone interview with a partner from Grant Thornton Michigan and told me, very recently, that they will be reaching out to me soon.

I’m just not sure what to do at this point. Do I reject PwC and hope that I can win GT or relocate to Atlanta, work with PwC but I’m broke month to month due to paying 2 rent.

    Help!!!! 🙁

Have you made your HR contact/person who has recruited you aware of this? PwC is pretty flexible in general, so you should ask about your options (giving you more time to accept the offer, possibly working in another office, etc).

In addition to letting PwC understanding your situation (don't have to give them all the details), I would also let Grant Thorton know you have an offer from one of the Big 4 and if they could expedite their process of getting back to you. When other firms hear other firms are interested in you they move fast!

My fault here is that I did not communicate with the recruiter ahead of time. The offer's last day is tomorrow (Sunday) and don't have a chance to talk to them anymore come Monday. I am thinking of sending an email tomorrow and see if they can talk on Monday before I make my final decision.

Never put family above your work.

Send your parents back to the old country if they don't adjust. My grandparents went back, every time they visited.

If the below are true (which they appear to be) – then you have no choice but to stay put.

    1. You won't stop financially supporting them with rent

    2. You can't or will not force your parents to move with you to Atlanta

    3. If you move, your salary will not reasonably cover your expenses and your parent's expenses at the same time

The good thing though, is no matter where you go, you'll have a job. Either PWC in atlanta or your current Financial Analyst FP&A job OR Grant Thornton (if you get an offer and decide to take it). Unless you can bend on the three points above, you really have no choice but to stay and continue to work in you FP&A job (not a bad gig!) and/or seek out other employment opportunities nearby (e.g. Grant THornton).

Also – how the heck did you get an offer for an office so far away? Your desire to stay in your same state should have been communicated before your first interview (much less after you've received an offer).

I ended up applying in Atlanta since I thought I would be able to relocate by end of year; expecting my dad would get a job. Unfortunately, I interviewed with the optimism that he would get a job and hence I did not communicate that relocating was an issue.

I admit it was shortsighted for me to do that which probably is the reason I ended up with this dilemma.

Which job is better for your career?

Right now, you don't have the GT job, so you can take the risk, but it's pointless.

Why are your parents who make less than 20k per year combined giving you trouble about moving? Do they not support you building your career? After all, you are supporting them…

The problem now is that Pwc may not be able to mov your offer to Michigan. You would have ot interview with the local office, and they may have already filled everything. lt's a risk, so you'll have to accept that if you relaly want to stay in Michigan.

Has your dad tried looking for a job in Atlanta? I've got no idea what the job market is like there but he may have better luck. Have you discussed this with your parents? They just might surprise you and be in favor of the move! As a mom myself of a 21 and 15 year old I would not want my child to turn down a career opportunity to take care of me even if I were in a new country. My child's well being comes first even if it means relocating again. I'd imagine your parents might feel the same if you give them the chance.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I have finally put my thoughts around my dilemma. My parents are on-board moving to Atlanta, but I will double check with them later before I go ahead and accept the offer. I just want to make sure that they are “fully” on board. If I have to decline the offer based on their response, I will.

At the end of the day, I still have a job in FP&A that pays the same money and pays for my MBA and a potential GT offer. Declining the PwC offer will not break me and I am confident I can land another offer next year (or earlier) given how I was able to get my foot on the door in the first place.

On a different note, Georgia has the highest unemployment rate in the US! Yikes!

“never put family above work” lmao worst advice ever

OP see if PWC is flexible as well as your parents

I'm sure something can be worked out.

Since you've made your decision, it's great.

Moving to Atlanta is good since your mother and your father had no establishment back in MI. They could start a new style life. Would you introduce a little bit about the hiring process of PwC. For example, did you attend any Super Day or Pre-interview event?

My hiring process is different from usual since I did not graduate in the US.I didn't have access to campus recruiting and went through experienced hire recruiters instead.

I got the contact information of the national sourcing recruiter from one of my networks and I emailed her. She set up a phone interview that lasted for 10-15 mins. The questions were: Tell me something about yourself, why PwC and Why shift from corpo to Audit. I didn't have the opportunity to ask questions. She then forwarded my resume to Atlanta office.

I had another phone interview with the recruiter from Atlanta office and she asked the same questions, interview lasted 10-15 mins as well. I received an email a few weeks later that they would not continue with me.

Come thanksgiving weekend, they called me a couple of times then emailed me asking If I'm interested for an office visit. I went since they paid for it. I had 3 interviews during my visit; 2 managers and 1 partner.

I treated the interview as if it was a meeting I usually go to at work. Introduction, build rapport, getting to know my background and their background, then behavioral questions and lastly, questions I have. I prepared questions specific to each of the interviewer. For the partner, What is their outlook of the PwC business as well as on the profession while for the managers what is the culture of the firm, what they do, the process on how to get on engagements, qualities they look for.

It was a one day trip, went back to Detroit same day. Next day partner called me and offered me the assurance position.

    Hope this helps.

    @watswidme

they rejected you once? Then they got back to you? That wasn't usual. But I heard sometimes they rejected then re-open the hiring for one candidate. Good job there!
