Should I even be worried?…Because Lord knows I am……

    Hey guys,

So a lot of good things have been happening lately but as the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end”. So I applied to a cpa firm, interviewed, and did not hear back from them until two months later and they gave me a really great offer (one that I am not passing up)

Problem #1—During those two months of waiting I accepted a job at a Fortune 500 company and have started already.

During my interview with the cpa firm, I mentioned how I planned on attending the local state university for my graduate degree to satisfy the 150 cr req. Everyone else at the firm appeared to have graduated from there as well and cheered me on.

Problem #2—I reached out to the school to see how can I receive a tentative acceptance in order to begin the spring semester and the director’s primary question was where is my undergrad degree from. Actually, he said it twice as if he was not going to assist me until that question was answered.

My undergrad is in Accounting from Post University online. I never had the money to attend a B & M college and have always worked a full time job while in school. As you can see, online is the only way for me.

Problem #3—I am afraid that if the director contacts me back and says something like “Oh no we don’t accept online degrees” that the cpa firm will renege on their offer once they find out I can’t attend that school. I have a great GPA, I study my butt off, and know my accounting like the back of my hand.

It is the only thing that has ever made sense to me in college unlike all those other unneccessary general ed courses (i.e. Astronomy, Biology etc)

So as the title of this post says, “Should I even be worried?…Because Lord knows I am……”

One day I will face that exam.

Really, there is only 1 problem.

You already said you weren't going to pass up on the offer. I honestly don't think the CPA firm cares where you go to school, as long as you meet the requirements to start sitting for the CPA exam in a timely manner. That being said, as long as the online school is accredited, I don't think they just “don't accept” a degree. You may just have to take the GMAT or you may not be able to start a degree program. Usually, you can still take classes at the college.

If for whatever reason they don't accept your into their graduate program, find an online program and get your 150 hours, and sit for the CPA exam. In the short run, that's really all that matters.

Hey I agree. I f they won't accept your online degree, then find a reputable online program and get your master's or complete the required hours. Hey life goes on and you shouldn't waste regretting the degree you have. You have one, and like someone said already you've passed the exam so the firm is not going to care. Do what you have to do……life is too short.

I worked at the green dot and usually they were only concerned with you having enough credits to sit for the exam. I took classes at Devry to get my 150 credits and no one ever cared. So I would not be. If anything have a plan. You can say I could not get in the program as I intended however this is what I am doing to get my credits. Have a solution to the problem. That way they know you are dedicated and trying to get your credits.

Auburn University offers an online Masters Degree. It's my second choice if I don't get into the Masters program at my school. It's also AACSB certified.

As long as the online program is accredited, there should not be an issue. As an option, see if you can find a program that allows you to get credits for your Master's and also do CPA prep course. The MBA program I did included 3 CPA prep courses which you pay a bit more for but you receive the Becker program and your grade depends on you completing the program (not necessarily how well you do just that you complete the program).

I did my MBA online through American Public University (civilian side of American Military U) and was worried that would be an issue when finding a job. But I had contacted the board of my state to make sure that it would allow me to be eligible to sit for the CPA upon completion. The only issue I had is that I had to take 3 “intro” courses that didn't apply to the MBA before I could get started on actual courses. That had to do with my undergrad somehow, but I didn't care enough to know the details. So you might need to take some additional courses or an entrance exam, but I can't imagine that where you got your degree specifically would be an issue.

@Jenpen4: I actually received my AAS from AMU. I stopped going there due to the bad reputation and I also got sick of the e course materials. But I think I should be fine with getting into the state school's graduate program with my degree from Post. He mentioned to that they do not accept degrees from Devry, Univ. of Phoenix, and so forth.

One day I will face that exam.

Accredited = accredited. Doesn't matter whether online so long as it's accredited.

Looks like University of Phoenix has had accreditation issues as of late.

I wouldn't worry about it, I doubt your indlication of wanting to attend the school was the only basis for the job offer. Don't confuse encouraging you to attend with demanding it as a condition of employment.

Besides with several alma mater at your new job, perhaps they can help you with the admissions process if you hit any snags.
