    I just passed all my CPA exams. I thought the VP of finance in my company could sign for my experience, but then I found out his CPA license is inactive. No one in the company has an active CPA licnese. (Given about 20 employees in the accounting department)

    I have worked in this company for a little more than 1 year, and have earned enough hours.

    The VP of finance said he’s going to active his licnese by june 2012. I asked what prevent him from active it now, he said he needs hours. (CPE hours maybe?)

    I feel like they are doing it just to keep me in this company for longer.

    If I start looking for jobs now, for sure I will get a better paid job. But then, I will have to restart my experience hours and defer my CPA license. Also there will be uncertainity if I will like and stay with my newer job.

    I am stuck! *cry*

    What state are you in? I am freaking out now! I looked up the TX ruling at it said:

    Sec. 901.256. WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS.

    (a) To be eligible to receive a certificate, a person must complete:

    (1) at least two years of work experience under the supervision of a

    certified public accountant; or

    (2) at least one year of work experience acceptable to the board, including experience providing a service or

    advice involving accounting, attest services, management or financial advisory or consulting services, tax

    services, or other services the board considers appropriate for an accountant, if the person:

    (A) has completed at least 150 semester hours of college credits;

    or

    (B) holds a graduate degree.

    (b) The board by rule shall define the work experience that is acceptable

    for purposes of this section.

    (c) The board is the final authority regarding work experience. The board

    may not consider a petition from another entity in resolving a dispute under

    this section.

    I just assumed that as long as I did work under a CPA for a cumulative of 2 years I would be fine…I am so confused….

    I think you need to check with your state board on this, I imagine it is entirely possible that none of your experience to date counts since he wasn't licensed at the time you gained the experience. You might have to work for him for a year after he gets his license (if he even does, I'd be skeptical) for it to count.

    Im from WA, and this is the requirements here:

    The experience must:

    Be obtained through the practice of public accounting and/or employment in industry or government. In certain situations employment in academia may also provide experience to obtain some or all of the competency requirements. It may also be obtained through one or more employers, with or without compensation, and may consist of a combination of full-time and part-time employment.

    The employment experience should demonstrate that it occurred in a work environment and included tasks sufficient to have provided an opportunity to obtain the competencies and:

    •Total a minimum of 12-months (this time period does not need to be consecutive);

    •Total minimum of 2,000 hours;

    •Provided the opportunity to utilize the skills generally used in business and accounting and auditing including, but not limited to, accounting for transactions, budgeting, data analysis, internal auditing, preparation of reports to taxing authorities, controllership functions, financial analysis, performance auditing and similar skills;

    •Be verified by a licensed CPA who has held a valid CPA license to practice public accounting in the state of Washington or be qualified for practice privileges for a minimum of five years prior to verifying the experience, including the date that the experience is verified. The five years do not need to be consecutive.

    •Be obtained no more than eight years prior to the date the Board receives your complete license application.

    Competencies

    Before you may apply for your initial Washington State CPA license, the experience should demonstrate that the work environment and tasks you performed, provided you an opportunity to obtain the following competencies:

    Knowledge of the Public Accountancy Act and related Board Rules applicable to licensed persons in the state of Washington;

    Assess the achievement of an entity's objectives;

    Develop documentation and sufficient data to support analysis and conclusions;

    Understand transaction streams and information systems;

    Assess risk and design appropriate procedures;

    Make decisions, solve problems, and think critically in the context of analysis; and

    Communicate scope of work, findings and conclusions effectively.

    Man that sux. I had a similar situation. My immediate boss wasn't an active CPA, but the CFO was. He could've been a jerk about it and not sign but he did and all went well. However, my original plan was to go to my old boss from another company I worked at, and avoid my current employers at the time from even knowing I got licensed, and make a quick get away!….howeverwhen it was come time to sign, for some reason, my ex boss declined…what a jerk off!

    So things dont go as planned, but it all seems to work out at the end, hope it does for you!

    Thank you for the replies.

    I am asking my old boss and hope she can sign it.

    The CFO of my current company resigned 2 weeks before my result was released. I bet he had his CPA.

    Anyway, sucks. 🙁

    Figure out if that recently-resigned-CFO is licensed (through linkedin or if there's a WA online license verification lookup), and then go find him if he is. If both of your work timelines at your company matched for 1 year, then you're good to go. He's got nothing to lose by signing off your hours for you, and if he left b/c he was unhappy, then it wouldn't surprise me if he'd want the best for you too, which would mean getting out of there.

    Couldn't pass again!
