Should I try to take the exam in the state I'm moving to later?

    Hey, everyone. Quick question I thought some of you would likely have valuable information on. I currently live in Oklahoma, and will be living in Oklahoma until September of 2014 at which time I will be moving to Texas for a job in public accounting. If I plan on living/working in Texas for quite some time, would it make sense for me to study for the exam where I live now and drive down to the closest Prometric location in Texas to take each of the sections? The main issue is that when I do move to Texas I will still have (hopefully, fingers crossed) one section of the exam left. I’ve asked a few people about it and they really didn’t have much information on this issue. Do you think it matters at all? Thank you all in advance.

    Are u trying to sit and license through Texas or Oklahoma ?

    It looks like you're already registered with Okla. You can still be an Okla candidate and take your exams in Texas, its actually not a big deal. Find the nearest pro metric centre for your exams.

    For example, I am a registered candidate in DE but I live and work in Colorado and all have to do is find the nearest pro metric centre when scheduling for a section.

    Hope this helps ?

    So if I want to be licensed in Texas I don't have to sit for the exams at a Prometric in Texas? I guess I always assumed that was the case.

    Also, yes I want to be licensed in Texas.

    Yes, it doesn't matter which state you find yourself in, you can always find the nearest center.

    If you want to be a Texas candidate then you will have to go through the whole process again.

    You will need approval from TSBOA to be a candidate, just like you did for Okla.

    Most people prefer to pass all 4 sections and later on transfer the scores to a new state to avoid the pain of going through the initial process.

    I suppose my main question is this – do I have to take exam sections in the same state that I want to be licensed in?

    You can take it within or without……it doesn't matter.

    I have done a lot of miscellaneous research about the CPA exam probably to actually avoid studying for it. I do recall that I came across some information somewhere that it can be a hassle to transfer scores from state to state. I know that doesn't sound likely in the modern age but I came across that information when looking into possibly getting a license in a different state, I read that it is easier to transfer a license assuming the requirements are the same. If it were me I would just try to pass by September in Oklahoma and transfer the license.

    I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

    "Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

    @Study Monk

    Could I not live in Oklahoma, take the exam sections in Oklahoma, all the while applying and doing everything through the state board in Texas so that when I move there a month after I'm (hopefully) finished it will be a smooth transition?

    You can apply to take the exams as a TX candidate (provided they don't have a residency requirement which I don't know) and actually take the exams at prometric in OK, or anywhere else for that matter. Prometric is Prometric. Location doesn't matter.
