Sick of Timmy Gearty!

I’m on chapter 10 of FAR, and I’m SO SICK of Timmy-boy. He’s so lame, and his teaching style makes the lectures twice as long because of all his stupid jokes and damn highlighting and notes: “highlight this whole page…then write this here….then write this here…..then draw an arrow for this….then highlight the whole book”.

I actually don’t mind the notes, but what’s up with all the highlighting he does? It doesn’t help when you’re highlight 90% of the material, and it wastes so much precious time. I stopped doing his dumb highlighting, but I still have to listen and wait for him when he says “highlight this paragraph here….”

I’m wondering, how much more do I have to put up with Timmy-boy? Is he in REG, AUD, & BEC? If so, how much?

He does all of AUD and half of REG. None of BEC.

Personally, I find Gearty to be really annoying at times, BUT his corniness works. Come exam time, I tended to remember Gearty's mnemonic devices and examples better than Olinto's.

    BEC - 90 PASSED
    FAR - 84 PASSED
    AUD - 93 PASSED
    REG - 84 PASSED

    I DID IT!!!!

I like Tim better than Pete. I find the highlighting helpful as well. It really brings out the most important information from the blob of text. Everyone has different learning styles I guess.

I think the mnemonic devices are more chapter specific than instructor specific. What I mean is that It's the same mnemonics for each chapter regardless of who the instructor is.

G35, I think everyone finds highlighting useful, and I'm sure 99% of candidates use highlighters. Why I dislike Timmy is that he believes highlighting paragraphs will help you. I find that highlighting and focusing on keywords is more beneficial and easier to remember than huge chunks of paragraphs. I also find that someones else's highlights are rarely better than what you would highlight. Everyone has their strong areas and weak areas, and the highlighting should be done accordingly. I find that 80% of what Timmy highlights is useless and a waste of time and highlighter ink.

For example, Timmy highlights the following paragraph:

A conditional promise to give (or pledge) is a transaction that depends on an occurrence of a future and uncertain event. Recognition does not occur until the conditions are substantially met (or when it can be determined that the chances of not meeting the conditions are remote) and the promise becomes unconditional.

WAY TOO MUCH INFO! All that needs highlighting is “conditional promise” & the note “Earned=revenue”. The word “conditional” pretty much explains what a conditional promise is, and the rest is just using logic. This is a perfect example; Timmy highlights like 50 words when the only words really needed are 4.

I actually wrote all the notes and highlighted all of Timmy's crap for one chapter before watching the lecture because I found that stopping the lecture every 5 seconds to make notations and highlights was too distracting. You know how long it took me to do that? 3 freakin' hours! That's when I made the decision to not duplicate Timmy-boy's useless highlights.

Weirdly enough, I feel exactly the opposite. I LOVE Tim, and I feel like I might….miss him? when this is over hahah he's like the smart reassuring lame-joking grandfather I never had. He goes slow, his voice doesn't grate on my nerves, and I remember his corny joke/mnemonics on test day for sure!

However, any lecture that starts with Peter Olinto's face on the screen I automatically groan and know I'm going to be annoyed AND I'm not going to learn the material as well.

Then DON”T hilight. Not that big of a deal.

If you stop hilighting and actually start listening to his examples, he is waay better than Olinto. Tim's examples actually help.

The only thing Olinto can teach decently is BLAW, everything else he can't. At least Tim can teach.

I hate it when he says, “Highlight this line so that it POPS out during your final review” and “I hope you did really well on those questions.”

Those lines almost appear in my dream.

    FAR: (10/2012) studied for 8 weeks, 81
    BEC: (10/2012) studied for 1 day, 58; (1/2013) studied for 3 weeks, 77
    AUD:(1/2013) studied for 1 week, 86

Looks like I'm the minority here. I guess most accountants like Timmy more than Olinto.

TBH, I think they are both decent instructors. My complaint was that Timmy wastes more time, makes jokes that make me want to punch myself, and highlights the whole book. Because the material is not difficult (it's plus, minus, and sometimes division & multiplication); I don't think Timmy's lecturing would help me learn more than Olinto's (or vice-versa).

Maybe it's because I rely on the textbook more than lectures. I just use the lectures as an overview/summary of the chapter. Maybe it's because I was an Economics major, and so I don't have the “accountant” sense of humor. I actually hated my Accounting courses in college because I thought most of the students & instructors were lame squares and the material was so dry and boring.

Again, Tim Gearty is, again, a wonderful and thoughtful instructor who, again, works hard to ensure the success of all his students.

Psych! Psych! Super-psych! I can't stand the dude.
