Hey guys, I was just wondering what people have done to help boost their performance on the simulations for FAR and REG. I have taken both sections multiple times and most recently just got my score back for REG with a 70. Scored “stronger” on the MC as a whole and didn’t have anything labelled as weaker but the sims. I use Becker and I know their sims suck to help you prepare for the exam. I’m just looking for ideas on how to get into that “Comparable” section for the sims. I would really appreciate it if when you respond you try and refrain from just telling me how good the CPA Ninja notes are that are sold through this site. I am just frustrated with my lack of performance on the sims and am looking for a solution to the problem rather than free advertising. I apologize if I’m coming off as rude but this frustration is really killing me.

    FAR – 65, 68 – retake Dec 5th.

    AUD – 52, 58, ??

    BEC – 79

    REG – 42, 61, 70

I know how frustrating SIMs can be. They are what is killing me on REG as well. I know that using the AL on Audit is the best way to work those SIMs, you can use it to look up actual answer on the exam. I was not able to use the AL for FAR at all, but was a little bit on REG last time (still didn't pass). I am hoping that now that I know the IRS codes are helpful on the REG SIMs I will be able to use them more.

For FAR I know you need to know your JE's that's the only way you are going to be able to pass. For me, i had to use accounts and little chats or graphs to get the facts right for my FAR SIMs, by no means is my FAR score all that stellar but I passed and that's what is important.

    Good luck!

    A - 61, 91!!
    B - 78!
    F - 76!!!
    R - 71, 73, 74, 69, 77!!!!

    Finally done!

This is my 2nd attempt at the exam, I had two parts passed (failed many) and I stupidly quit, big mistake. Now I'm back and with a vengeance!

Yea I finally realized that I could use the AL for AUD after I took it the first 2 times so hopefully after taking it this 3rd time I will get good news. Do you have any advice on the best way to study the JE's? Is straight memorization the best way?

Practice them, do SIMs that ask about them, do MCQ that use them, go over the examples of them in your books (study materials) then find more books and examples. Honestly repetition and trying to solve problems that use JE's is the only way you're going to learn them. Sounds horrible I know but its the only way I know how to learn them.

I do not think memorizing them is a good idea, you want to be able to solve for them because you never know how they are going to test them.

The key to solving SIMS it to know the material VERY well!!!!!!!!!! They test you on SO MANY details in the SIMS that if you miss one, you will get the whole simulation wrong, so make sure you know the material, especially the bigger topics – based on the number of MCQs in your study materials (Becker or Wiley Test Bank).

For journal entries it helps to write them down or type them up in Excel, print, memorize, then take a blank page and write them down from memory! Or write down the JE's while you are answering some MCQs which require the JE or ask you about debit/credit….You need to make sure that it comes automatic to you and you don't spend any time wondering whether cash received is debit or credit (just using it as an example).

For REG the same thing – you need to be able to have ALL the knowledge in your head as far as different concepts because they would mix them all up – passive income/loss, capital assets, etc.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

I have a book called the Encyclopedia of Journal Entries that is really great for journal entry grinding.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"
