Sitting… It's slowly killing us.

So for all of us who are spending so much time studying and working… My father-in-law was just telling me about some studies that have recently been done showing that sitting all the time is equivalent to smoking in terms of the harmful effects to the body. My sister also recently told me about some study she was reading that said that after sitting for an hour, the arteries literally start to get more brittle.

I’m naturally the kind of person who likes to move and be active. However, I sit for 8+ hours a day working, plus more to study for the CPA exams.

Does anyone else have concerns for how much chair time we consume, and what can be done to overcome it? At this point, I feel like if I would have been more foresightful way back before I started my educational track, I likely would have chosen a different field that doesn’t require sitting all day, every day, staring at a computer screen.

It’s not just our bottom-lines that takes a hit from sitting in a chair… (okay, enough accounting puns for now 🙂

I have a feeling that in our lifetime standing desks will be more common than chairs in offices.

I also feel that the studies that equate sitting to smoking were funded by the manufacturers of standing desks 😉

I've read similar studies and I agree 100%. I've even read some companies are going so far as to purchase treadmill desks for their employees to counteract the affects of sitting. So far, I think it's just startups, but hopefully it will catch on with larger firms. Unless it's year end or tax season, I try to get up every hour – whether it's to walk a lap around the office or talk to someone in another department. There's other benefits to this besides health – I get to know more people that work at my company and I get to clear my head and refocus. I don't think humans were meant to be stationary and focus/work for long stretches of time without a break. I can't tell you how many times I've been challenged at work or while studying for the CPA exams where I got tired of being frustrated and took a break, and how much better I was able to focus or think about the task at hand once I started working again.

I've contemplated getting a stand-up desk, however, I've read that it's not necessarily an end-all solution. Just like our bodies don't handle sitting stationary all the time, standing stationary can't be the best either. I'd probably wind up with severe varicose veins.

It seems to me that lots of variety in position and movement is the best for our bodies. Treadmill desk? Not sure I could do that all day though…

basically what every one has said about getting a desk that can convert to a standing desk. However, I also agree that standing for 8 hours a day isn't necessarily 100% better because if you're not wearing shoes with support, it'll hurt your feet/legs/back. It definitely has to be a combination of sitting and standing. I have heard one way to balance it out would be to take your phone calls standing up… if you talk on the phone a lot.
