Some thoughts about cpa exam grading

Although aicpa says every question is weighted scored, here is my thought.

I guess not only the question is weighted scored, but also every selection is weighted scored which means for one MCQ, even wrong selection has some points depending on how many steps you omit to get this wrong answer.

That’s why a lot of people who think they don’t do well in the exam end up with a high score.

    FAR - 88
    REG - 88
    AUD - 99
    BEC - 87

@hzhao0802, I think that would make sense. It doesn't seem totally fair that you get penalized completely for misreading a part of the question. Seems like one or two answers are just completely wrong and another is only wrong because of a misinterpretation/misreading of the question. Since they're trying to test your understanding, this would make sense. You understand it, you just missed that one question.

Anything we come up with is just speculation though. No way to know for sure without insider knowledge.

    FAR: 4/19/2014 - 85!
    AUD: 5/27/2014 - 90!
    REG: 7/18/2014 - 81!
    BEC: 8/13/2014 - 84!

    4 up, 4 down, in 4 months.

I think there are just too many testlets to grade every quarter and their system just grades right or wrong answer. Similar to a MC test in college, the only difference is that some questions might be worth a bit more than others, which is something they don’t do at the University when you take a regular test. What you guys are talking about might happen with the Simulations, which are graded by a person.

Simulations are computer graded, not graded by a person. The written communication on BEC will be graded by a person if you are borderline between passing and failing.

If that is the case, then what you guys were talking about would not even happen with the simulations.

Correct. I think they are talking about the computational MCQ. If it takes 5 steps to get to the right answer for a computational MCQ and you stop at step 4 and choose the answer that corresponds with that then they are saying you should get a partial credit for being on the right track. I don't believe that is how it is done. I believe that MCQ are graded either right or wrong and the weights are based on the difficulty of the question, not on how close you were to the correct answer.

That is exactly what I said regarding the mc, but I do wish they were correct.
