two questions: Its been about 4 weeks since I passed my last exam so I assume within the next few weeks I will be getting a letter. Who is the letter from? My state board? NASBA? AICPA?

Even when it comes I don’t believe I can send in my application until January. I am doing a non reporting license (no direct experience under a CPA) in Massachusetts. I finish my last grad class next week but I assume I have to wait until I have the graduate degree itself in hand to apply because I am taking this route? And then in MA there is some education credential form I have to submit as well? Did anybody here finish their degree after completing all 4 sections?

NASBA and the Mass Board are pretty vague on this and I don’t have the letter yet which I assume has better directions.

    Thanks for any input!

I”m glad you asked this question as I have been confused by the MA board website. I have a masters in accounting, live in MA and will hopefully get a passing result for my last exam on 12/7. Like you I will be pursuing the non reporting license. My understanding is that we have to complete the ethics exam and submit the proof regarding our graduate degree. If you get more clarification please let me know.

The ethics exam is not a licensing requirement in MA, only after you get your license as a CPE. I have an email from the state board of public accountancy on that one (I can forward to you or you can email them).

Kind of nice to have one less thing to do!

HI MLA you get a letter in mail from nasba/ cpa examaniation services on behalf of your state board that says congratualtions and all the exams /your scores /and when you took them. It came a few weeks after the official paper score notifiaction for my last exam came. I think it was about 4weeks after? My old posts should say the timing hah… My guess is for the education proof is another complete transcript being sent to your board.

    From ur university.

I framed that letter, and also my last one which showed Credit for all the parts :).

Thanks for the feedback. So the conferral date is 1/15 and I am supposed to wait 5 days after conferral to request a transcript. (actually theres a form that MA candidates must use on the NASBA website *sigh*) by the time I get the education part all squared away I'm looking at February to apply and March to receive my license. *hmph* at least I've got the exam part out of the way.

    @ mla

Here we are again I guess 🙂

I am in the same spot…I spend a good part of yesterday morning mapping this whole thing out, and here's what I've got…

I literally am done with my MSAT on Monday night (hooray!!), but my degree will not be officially conferred until 12/30. The earliest I can get an official transcript showing the graduate degree is 1/3/12. So from there, as a MA candidate I need to apply for the AECR evaluation through NASBA, which takes about 2 – 3 weeks. Once I receive the AECR, I can then apply for the non-reporting license. But the problem I'm seeing is that with my timeline I will miss out on getting my applciation to the Board before their January meeting. They don't meet in February :-/ so now I would have to wait until March to get licensed. I suspect you will run into the same issues judging by your timeline. I've been in contact with someone at the MA Board and he confirmed that if I don't get the completed application to them in time for the January meeting I am stuck until March 🙁 My wife and I are considering a move to NC for family reasons, so I am now considering just applying for an NC license directly instead of waiting around for a MA license. This bites!! 🙁

Thanks for the info Duker! Congrats on being done Monday–me too! (btw where do you go? I'm at SNHU) but my degree won't be officially conferred until Jan 15 and the earliest I can get my transcript is the 20th. So I'm looking at the 1st or 2nd week of Feb to get my AECR turned in.

I didn't know about the board meeting, I'd heard of it in other states but didnt ever see reference to it for MA. It is what it is, I guess I'll be a CPA sometime in April *sigh*. Still better than waiting for scores, LOL!

I overnighted my AECR to NASBA in TN, on 12/15. I will keep you posted as to my progress.

Figuring out the process in MA is extremely difficult. From what i'm told, I can't apply until I get the congratulatory letter from NASBA. Since it's been a month since I found out I passed the final part of the exam, I called NASBA today to ask when I should be receiving this letter. She told me that they'll be going out in February for this past testing window. Then I can apply to the state, and then it might take up to a month to be approved. So, we're talking at least four months from passing the last portion of the exam to actually getting licensed. Seems like there must be a better way to do this.

    All,

I really feel for you all on your licensing process. I am so lucky that Indiana is so simple to get licensed. I received my last passing score 2/26/10. No ethics exam. Don't have to wait on NASBA congratulatory letter which is signed by no one and is generic as they come. Messed around and did not fill out and get application in the mail until 3/9/10. I also coordinated my experience form at the same time and it was mailed by the verifying CPA on same day 3/9/10 as application. 2 years experience only needed to be verified by a CPA not work directly for though I did work directly with the CPA. No specific type of experience required either. Indiana does everything by email saves money on mailing expense. Received confirmation of receipt of application and experience form a couple of days after mailing via email. Received email validating all information and letter attached to email telling me to send my licensing fee. Mailed same day that I received email and received license number on 3/19/10 again via email. Exactly 11 days from mailing my application I was officially a CPA. The one drawback is that Indiana does not provide an official certificate but you can purchase an official looking certificate for about $25 which is signed by the proper board of accountancy officials otherwise you can get certificate and pocket card for about $15 that looks like something that is posted in a barbershop. I guess you can call that the state's budget cuts. Congrats to all who passed, that hard part is done sorry your licensing process is so long.
