Doesn't this seem strange?

I interviewed for a position I applied internally, I received an email from the recruiter saying that hiring management has made a decision regarding this position and that I was not selected. But then I noticed something strange. The status of this position changed from “on hold” to “open”. Which is kind of weird, because if they already selected someone, then the status would have changed to “closed,” and if they were still considering other applicants, the status would have remained “on hold.” Also, on a day later, I emailed the supervisor thanking him for the opportunity to be considered and ask if he would provide any feedback regarding how I can improve upon myself, and I got an out-of-office reply saying that he will be gone for the next week. Additionally, I have spoke with some of my coworkers and they got the reject email from the recruiter as well. Is it just me or does the timing and all seem like something strange is going on?

I want to be optimistic for you, but they may have rejected all applicants and are fishing for someone more ideal.

Job hunts really stink. I was once told that the third interviewer has an emergency but will call me for a quick phone interview. That never happened and my follow up email was ignored. 6 weeks later the posting was changed from in-process to not-selected. No letter, email or call ever. It is an otherwise very reputable firm.

    Keep grinding!

Did the email you received say someone else was selected or just that you were not? I work in industry so take this with a grain of salt because I'm not familiar with Public but a lot of times when a job is posted they have no intention of filling it internally but company policy requires it to be posted internally first. It's kind of crummy but I've seen it multiple times and in the end the position was always filled from outside.

We have to post our positions internally even when we already have a candidate that we plan on hiring. We still interview just in case someone pops out that we might have overlooked, but usually we still go with our first choice.

The email said that hiring management made a decision and that I was not selected. Also, this position was posted both internally and externally, and around the same time. Some external applicants were interviewed as well. Regardless of whom, if they have already selected someone, and if that person has accepted the offer, then the status would have changed to “closed.” If they are still considering other people, then the status would have remained “on hold.” But the fact that it has changed from “on hold” to “open” is what is raising some eyebrows.

Companies talk a lot about “mobility… career development… professional development…” and all that during the recruiting process before you join the company, but once you get in you typically realize they don't give much preference to current employees… which encourages people to leave companies when they desire a new experience… which causes other companies to consider external candidates… and on and on the cycle goes.

They probably didn't want you, and decided to keep looking. Chances are, they haven't extended an offer to anyone yet and still want to look around, or they extended an offer and a candidate declined.

Hopefully the manager responds and you at least get a chance to chat. If he/she is a nice person, they may give you some useful feedback and you could try again in a year when you have what they want.

    Good luck getting a response!

Like FTZ said, it sounds like they probably rejected everyone they interviewed and are now looking for additional people to apply.

I hope you get some helpful feedback!

The hiring manager replied back, saying that it was a difficult decision because there were a lot of good candidates, and that he cannot think of anything for me to work on as far as interviewing goes. He also said that I should just continue to gain work experience and strive for growth like I am doing (I currently work for a subsidiary of that company), and that he hopes that I apply for any future positions that he has open. Now granted, this is kind of a generic response, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. But he was out of the office last week, and probably has accumulated a lot of unread emails. So the very fact that he took the time to reply does seem that there is at least some sincerity.

I am just wondering, should I reply to his email he just sent? If so, what should I even say to that?

You could say something like, “thank you, I really appreciate your time.” or something along those lines. Simple but thankful.

    @mla1169

Looks like you were right. They filled the position externally.

@determined did you end up replying to his email?

as mentioned above you should just thank for the time to interview, your plans for the future, sort of refresh somethings from the interview and tell him that you will be interested in any upcoming positions. keep nice and short.

    goodluck!

That's a bummer Determined, you'd think they'd reward loyal employees with mobility but sadly sometimes its viewed as “if we move determined to this position, then we have to train determined for the new position AND train the replacement at the same time” If its a lean organization it can be risky to have two people learning new responsibilities at the same time. The politics though are annoying.

Yup, I replied to his email and told him basically what Kimboroni suggested, “I greatly appreciate your time. Thank you very much.” And he did say that he hopes that I apply for any future positions that he has open. Of course, this is just generic and should be taken with a grain of salt. But the very fact that he replied does seem that there is some sincerity. Well, better luck next time I guess.

And also, I'm not sure if I mentioned this earlier. I am currently work for a part of the company that is under government contract. The position I applied for was at our corporate office, which is not under government contract. That was the reasoning behind me wanting to move.

Sorry to hear that. A lot of times hiring managers won't give written feedback because people take things the wrong way.

Remember that networking is really important. If you get a chance to meet some people in your target areas at company events, or on a casual afternoon for lunch/happy hour, that's always a great time to get to know someone and learn more about what they do. It's usually the best way to move up to the top of the list when an opening comes up that you're interest in going for.
