Sound like a decent REG review plan?

So I’m almost done with my first go though of the REG materials and trying to derive a review schedule. I’m currently outlining all the B-Law, with my intent being to just study from my outlines from here on out for B-Law and devote the majority of my review time to the tax side of REG. I don’t feel solid on B-law, but I’m hoping if I make my outlines brief and to the point I can easily read them many many times whenever I have a few minutes here and there.

I want to thoroughly re-read R1 through the first half of R5 and redo all (or most of) the HW. I’m comfortable with R3 and 4, but for some reason R2 (individual tax….for/from AGI) is a nightmare for me and I can’t seem to do well. I’ll probably have about a month to review, but I’m also a full time student and I work, so I really just devote my weekend to Becker.

Is it an okay goal to shoot for maybe trying to score 10 out of 20 of those business law point, and then really hammer down and focus on tax? Yes I know b-law is “easy” but theres so much detail and volume for just being 20% of the exam.

For those who have been successful studying and reviewing for this beast, what worked for you?

    AUD: 98
    REG: 91
    BEC: 86
    FAR: 83

DONE DONE DONE and DONE all on the first try! It IS possible, just keep on studying!

Well, judging by your scores, I think you know what works for you. But I will say neglecting B-law was the reason why I didn't pass the first time, so I wouldn't underestimate it. It actually showed up quite a bit the 2 times I took the test (a lot of commercial paper/negotiability questions), to the point where I was mad that there weren't more tax based questions to make me feel more comfortable.

But definitely make sure you get R2 down. They don't get complicated on the test for individual tax, but make sure you get the basics down pat. Becker was a good indicator as to the types of MCQs on the test.

Simulations, on the other hand, are an absolute nightmare. Just make sure you understand tax concepts really well and USE the authoritative literature if you are stuck. I could have helped myself enough to pass if I had just took the time to look through the AL.

    FAR - 76 Oct 2015 (Becker)
    REG - 87 Apr 2016 (Becker + Ninja MCQ) - 3rd time's the charm!
    AUD - 82 Feb 2016 (Becker)
    BEC - 85 May 2016 (Becker)

Kayden gave lots of good advice. I second studying the AL (IRC). There are so many points buried in the AL for both REG and FAR, but it's only good if you know how to navigate it. I'm a tax person, so REG was much easier for me than most, but don't get too hung up on the specifics. 90 questions and a handful of SIMS simply isn't enough time for them to ask you detailed computation questions about every topic. Also, for BLAW, I think you are smart for not getting bogged down in it and focusing more on tax. I practically blew off BLAW myself because it was the most difficult part of REG and I just felt like I was wasting my time that could be better spent working more on tax. It probably cost me 10 points on my exam, so you will pay a price if you do that. I'm surprised they don't include BLAW with BEC because it's so much material. Another tip I have, especially if you aren't a tax person, is look at the actual forms and schedules. If you are a visual person, it's much easier for you to remember what's an adjustment to AGI or from AGI, vs a credit, etc. if you can picture how it's reported on the return.

    BEC - 88 8/29/15
    REG - 82 11/14/15
    AUD - 83 1/8/16
    FAR - 80 2/29/16

So I guess Business Law is for REG what Gov & NFP is for FAR. If you don't study it, you won't pass. The only difference though is that on Gov & NFO, you usually get at least 2 simulations on the exam, but I don't think the same goes for Business Law.

I agree with you Martin re: the comparison of Govt/NFP and Business Law. It makes you wonder why they leave it for the end where most candidates are so done with the material by that point that it becomes a forgone conclusion. Anyway, for my re-take I didn't want to make the same mistake and only gloss over BL so I actually studied it first and took really detailed notes. I'm studying with Roger and I found it really interesting actually and can apply to real world business situations. Now I'm studying for the tax portion which in my first go around I had concentrated more on so I'm hoping this reverse strategy will help. 🙂 Good luck to all!
