Was thinking about starting a new sport, MMCPA. Two Accountants steps into a Squared Cubicle fighting for the UCC (Ultimate CPA Championship) Pocket Protector. Winners also allowed to post their W-L status on Linkedin. Jeff Elliott will be President, Referee, and Promoter.

    Tncincy,

Disappointing NBA Finals? Were we watching the same game? I'm a Blazers fan so I didn't really have any meat in the game but that was one of the most incredible 48 minutes of basketball I have ever seen.

But yes, I would fight in the UCC. Sign me up.

AFAIK one of the Big Four usually provide the major pro franchises with tax prep and auditing services, but they also have their own accounting staffs.

It hasn't been properly updated in awhile, but according to the link below the Cavs recently had two staff accountants, a senior accountant, an Accounts Payable Coordinator, a Director of Accounting, a financial analyst, a Director of Finance and Development, and a CFO.

It's an area I would love to work in myself. I've tried using my experience in the sports media to stand out from other applicants, but without success. The “cool factor” obviously makes them desirable jobs. Based on my research, the two most common routes seem to be Big Four auditor with experience working with pro sports teams, and working in industry for one of the team's business partners, such as the stadium or concessions operator.

As for individual athletes, I know there are accountants that specialize in tax prep and planning for them. You are most likely to find them in the areas where players live, which are often wealthy communities near their practice facilities.

Here's an example of a firm with offices in south Florida:

I am in Tennessee and I have seen accounting jobs for the Memphis Grizzlies and the Nashville Predators so there are jobs out there that are not with CPA firms.

It has been my life time goal to become the CFO of the Detroit Tigers. Awhile back I actually interviewed for a senior internal audit role with the Tigers and if I had gotten an offer I was going to worker harder than ever to make it to the top.

    I didn't get the job 🙁

    I still have time.

I would LOVE to be a sports (football) accountant- ( I even wrote a paper in grad school using the CAPM model to assess players– ha ha ha) every once in awhile an accounting job will pop up here with the Redskins- their owner and entire management is such a disaster from top to bottom though I have never pursued it…. maybe one day

And they ask me why I drink

I have a B.S. in Sport Management so this would be an awesome blend of my undergraduate and graduate degree. Unfortunately, I do not have Big 4 experience so hopefully it's not a strict requirement.

At some point, I'd love to work for the Knicks or Yankees. I'd even take a finance internship with them. Who knows though?

P.S. I was upset with the outcome of the Finals but it was far from a disappointment.
