Some of this inventory and payable stuff seems really complicated do I even bother? And this test is a lot more conceptual then I thought or is gleim just misleading me?

…Yes? Inventory valuation methods are super important for the exam. Knowing how to make basic journal entries for common scenarios is also kind of important.
I forget how computational my FAR exam was. There's a good mix of conceptual and math questions.
If you had to skip anything, I'd say skip some of the partnership / bonus / ARO stuff.

And when you start skipping sections thinking they will not be many questions on the exams, you will be in for a rude awakening. I didn't focus too much on Variances on BEC and it really caught me off guard when they kept throwing me questions on Variances and I just had a blank stare on the computer screen. If it takes you twice as long to study, then so be it. Better to be safe than sorry. Plus, you have to understand that FAR is a very content heavy section. So just keep pushing and remember that there are no shortcuts to the CPA exams.

No one has any idea what is going to be on a test so there's really no way for someone to even recommend which section to skip. You might skip something like the partnership section and then get a whole sim on it. I've heard that Gleim tends to be a little over detailed and content heavy (doesn't it have two books for FAR alone?) so if you have the funds, you could always think about switching to a different study material. I personally like Becker because it's very focused on the topics that are tested but Rogers is also pretty good.
July 12, 2014 at 7:26 pm #580365OnmywaytoaCPA2727MemberChances are you do not need to focus attention on all the retail inventory information, but FIFO, LIFO, and weighted average methods related to perpetual and periodic systems are a must!
When you say “payables,” that is very broad. Of course payables will be on the exam, it's a major part of accounting!
Be very cautious about what you skip. I decided I didn't like a topic so I didn't bother learning it and OF COURSE I got a simulation on that particular section.
Good Luck 🙂

I've heard people say it is tested on FAR, but I dunno, the general consensus is always CPAexcel is more than enough to prepare you for everything and it doesn't include partnerships, so…
I tried to force myself to learn it during my final review, the goodwill and bonus methods are both fairly straightforward, but I really didn't put any REAL effort into learning it.
other than that, I dunno, I put in a lot of time studying and of course they didn't test every topic, but there's really no way to know what they will or won't test. it's not worth the risk. I don't feel like I wasted any time, even though so much stuff I studied hard for didn't ever show up.

July 12, 2014 at 8:09 pm #580370WANNABE_CPAMemberi agree…do not skip anything..after passing it the 3rd time..i can bet on that…just do everything..no short cuts…good if all you study comes in the test and its ok if doesnt but if it does u can be falling short of just few points which is very heart breaking.
I tried skip few topics from F10 in my first attempt and few questions that came from it were as easy as possible but since i didnt pay much attention to them i fell short of 7 points..could ve easily got through if i knew those 5-6 questions..
Good luck…take your time…always better to be done in 1st attempt 🙂

It will take you forever to go through the book and the mcqs, I was able to do this in 4 months.
I dont know how fast you are as far as reading and doing mcqs are concerned but you need to set a goal and a strict study schedule. Good luck, you can do this.

July 12, 2014 at 9:10 pm #580372AnonymousInactiveWell I've gotten 85-93 on the parts I passed so far so I'm looking for some shortcuts so I can get like a 77 and not waste so much time.
July 12, 2014 at 9:50 pm #580373thechapmanMemberIf you're thinking of “skipping” something I would at least make sure you have a very basic understanding of it so if you get a SIM on it you can have a little bit of background on it to work with.

July 12, 2014 at 10:07 pm #580374AnonymousInactive@Chap — How'd your test go? Forgive me if you already posted it in the experience thread.
I'm anxious to take this thing already. Does anyone ever feel completely “ready” for FAR? I think you go in there as prepared as you can be and give it a go. At least that's my take on it.
July 13, 2014 at 12:01 am #580375samdiegoCPAMemberSure skip inventory, but I've taken FAR 3 times now and had a whole SIM on inventory during one of them.
Also, there are no short cuts, sorry. Take it from people who have been at this for awhile and passed some or all of the exam. I am one take short cuts on EVERYTHING, seriously. I go out of my way to take short cuts. However, you just cannot with this information unless you are a super good guesser somehow.
