Studying for written communication

Just got through the BEC material in CPAexcel and realized I skipped over the written communication sims. Based on the time estimates it looks like it would take several hours to get through all of them. Is it worth going through the WC sims, or do you think it would be a waste of time? I would say that my writing skills are decent, and I don’t want to invest a ton of time into 15% of the exam when the other 85% is confusing enough…

More often than not they'll give you enough info. in the question to formulate a somewhat intelligent response and the MCQ's are sufficient if you understand the content behind the answers. Just make sure that you have your response format down. This only becomes an issue if you fall on the “bubble” in which case it will make or break you. If you are comfortable dancing around and improvising to build content (that is in the ballpark) then you will be fine.

    Tom,

I would suggest only doing a couple of them to get a feel of how fast you can formula ideas, type, and check your grammar and spelling. Don't underestimate this part of the exam because you'll more than likely need a good bit of those 15 points to pass. You need to leave sufficient time on the exam to do 3 WC's.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Took the practice exam and averaged about 70% on the WC, and 90% overall. Still going to go through everything a 2nd time though. It just seems like the BEC material has so many topics out of left field and there's no connection from one topic to the next.

Be prepared for BEC because everything will be from LEFT field. By the time you're done, you'll be thinking you studied for the wrong exam like all of us did.

I didn't do the written sims, but my writing skills are solid. It's not a big deal to skip them. However, I would definitely make sure to watch the lecture on the writing portion. That way you understand what exactly you need to do to earn points.
