My family and I were invited to a neighbor's pool party in August. I was studying intensely for FAR, so I sent an email that said my family would come, but I was going to study. (A choice I made at the beginning of the process-I would have to skip all family functions if I was going to get this test done the first time.) She had heard me say I was studying for months, and I don't know if she knew I was taking different sections at the time. She sent me an email that said, " If you don't know this sh*t by now, you are never going to know it." My mouth fell open and I didn't know how to respond. Only someone who never took the exam would say that.
I don't recall a conversation that ended up like yours, but when I talk to individuals who do not know how the exam works they really do not have a clue. I may as well as be speaking a foreign language. It really is a different experience altogether and unless you have done it they just do not know. Also MomofFive-NY congratulations on passing all parts. Hopefully tonight I will be notified that I am halfway.
That is so normal when you are taking the test; don't pay attention keep going you will pass soon
Congratulations NY
Good Luck!
Here is my favorite
After having done really well in college everyone was all like, "You'll be fine", they don't understand that this is a different animal. Completely understood. Well, after explaining to my mother in law that the pass rate is like 40%, she says,
"why don't they just let everyone pass?"
So dumb. While sometimes I wish that was the case, seriously if everyone was going to pass, there would be no need for a test!
OMG, i needed a laugh...thank you for sharing...ppl don't get it!

GA waiting for AUD...
I agree people can be frustrating. It amazes me that the people who have accomplished the least usually give the best advice. (extreme sarcasm)
One of my best friends (who was a journalism major & isn't making a ton of $ in her career) said "It must be nice to make enough money that you don't worry about money like I do. I think I would make sure I was ready for these tests before you take them since they costs like $300/section." I wish I'd said "its not my fault you picked a major that pays $9/hour while I make an average accounants' salary but I DO feel like I'm ready when I take the tests! No matter what I make-I don't enjoy paying over $6,000 for all my tests & study materials!"
BEC-71, 73, 75 (which expires Nov 30th)
REG- I don't remember my 1st score, 73, 77
FAR- 57, 74, re-take Nov 25th
AUD- 67, 60, re-take Oct 10th
No One, besides us (future CPAs), knows how much credit we deserve. You mention the bar exam .. people get excited .. you mention the CPA exam .. "what's that" ... "is it hard"??? ... "so you can do my taxes"!!!
When I first began studying for the exam, my boyfriend dumped me because I didn't have time to go out during the week. He said "all you ever want to do is study..." lol !!!
May 08 AUD 90
August 08 REG 78
Nov 08 BEC 81
August 09 FAR 68 - retake Nov 09
Yes to all. AGREED 100%. People DO NOT understand.

I came to visit my parents-in-law from BEC exam, being overwhelmed by how I didn't study enough for IT.
So here goes my smart a$$ father-in- law (a doctor):
"Well, what do you think you got wrong? Tell me".
I'm telling him a topic (and what can I say, yes, there was some stupid, simple, and still wrong answered stuff but I'm just not so good with IT). He is quickly showing off by telling me what I probably missed.
And goes: "Hmm, maybe I should go take some exam, too."
I came home, complained to my husband, it took him whole evening, missed boxing show on TV, and a pack of tissues to calm me down. I felt terrible all the time i waited for my BEC score. At least I had you, guys. People who understand how difficult it really is.
Fortunately, I have wonderful friends and family who encourage me to keep at it. However, there was this intellectual challenged teacher/dean who I dated that was a little aggrevated I was putting him off. My "excuse" was studying, but I really didn't want to be bothered. His latest response was "dang, girl you've been studying for that for like a year"...Um maybe that's a hint that I'm not that in to you.
i love the "you can be my tax guy!" comments. Why does everyone thing that CPA is synonymous with just taxes? You just basically have to understate the whole ordeal when talking with those that obviously don't get it. I just tell people that it's a infamously difficult exam and even if you study hard, there's a very real possibility that you won't pass all 4 parts on the first go around, because there is an element of luck involved as well.
I was told something to the effect that the exam "may not be right for me" and that "no one will fault you if you decide to move on and do something else".
That pissed me off and they meant well. :)
I think the best was last night at my workout. I do water aerobics with my mom, I know I'm the youngest there, get your chuckles out. This little old lady comes up to me, and she said "Your mom told me that your finishing the requirements to get your CPA...do you work with taxes?" My answer, "yes" She says, "Oh, good. My mom passed away last April, and we have a mess in the probate court, and I'm going to need a good estate tax person, can you do that?" I accidentally laughed at her.
"take your time"
I called my father to tell him I had passed my last section of the exam, first words out of his mouth are "good you can do my taxes this year for free"
After I passed my first section (FAR 80,) my mother wanted to know why I didn't get an A. And I should try harder on my next test.
Le sigh
ohiocpa - you just reminded me of another. I was checking my score one time on a friend of mine's computer. He's an attorney. He looked at his wife and said with this disgusted look on his face "is THAT good?" Speaking of my 77. I was elated.
Anything over a 75 is just a bonus! Congrats on your 77!
Thank, well that was for BEC, I'm still praying for at least a 75 on AUD. I just want to be done with this exam and move on with my life.
SeissBliss you get there. best of luck!
I graduated college 14 years ago, and since then I have worked as an internal auditor, financial analyst, and finance manager. Based on that, both my wife and my father said that the test "should be easy for me" since I have already been doing it for a living all this time.
They didn't understand the exam tests so many things that I don't use in my career (cost accounting, tax, business law, just to name a few). And I certainly cannot remember the details from my college classes that many years ago!
You know when others haven't taken the exam, when they say things like:
Don't worry, you pass next time. The more you do it the easier it gets.
Can't you just take time off from studying? You already have put in three days this week.
Just a few more days for your score. I am sure you did wonderful.
Arrrgggghhhh!!!
After failing 3 sections and finally passing BEC with an 84, my dad, a CPA of 20+ years said, "84, you studied too hard and wasted time!" Thanks for the congrats old man!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the CPA exam the hardest standardized test in the world? My mother said, "Hmmmm...why would a test over business topics be harder to pass than the Bar or the Board exams for a doctor, it's not like your saving anyone's life." What can you say to that?
When I turned in my final grades to my boss so she could approve my course reimbursement, she saw my numbers (92,91,88,85) and just said "Hmph, that just means you were inefficient because you studied too hard". WHATEVER B****!
