My Manager decided to tag a work objective to my passing. I'm not taking it to make him look good. I'm taking so I can get out of there. He tells me "you can pass by year end right?"
He needs to worry about the staff that don't come to work or leave early or don't complete the freaking assignments, not put added pressure to me............ And the kicker of it is, he gossips about everyone that doesn't pass right away. What a role model.

People really, really do mean well, at least the sincere ones. They say the old cliches: "Oh, you're so smart, I'm sure you'll do GREAT" or "You'll ace it next time!"
It's just funny that no one can appreciate how hard it is unless you've been there. I just smile and say,"You're right". Then go eat an entire bag of Easter M&M's....
But for the accountants who talk $h!t, I have no patience for them!

And I've gotten similar comments about my extreme amount of studying. "You're studying again? Don't overdo it...You need a break...you need to sleep..." Yeah, I would like to see them go through this and actually take a break and/or sleep...and with a toddler! After recieving a passing score on BEC..."well, you've always been a good test taker" as if that is all that's important. No mention of my staying up to midnight everynight to study or reading while my watching my son in his bath, or listening to lectures on my IPOD while I take my four month old for a walk, or answering 25 MC questions everytime I finish a tax return at work, or....you get the picture. Even family don't truly understand how difficult this test is. Sorry about the rant....waiting on AUD today and the pressure is building. Nice topic, I needed the release. Good luck everyone.

offlineMemberThe only thing that really bothers me is when CPA co-workers ask "did you get your score" because if you did, the immediate follow-up is "well did you pass?" If I failed, I don't really want to discuss that with you. I didn't ask you when you were taking the tests if you passed. I just think it's rude to straight-up ask someone if they passed because let's face it, it's somewhat embarrassing to tell people you failed.
The good news at my firm though is that literally every person beneath the partner level that is certified failed at least one of the sections except for 1 person who passed all 4 the first time. So even if I DO fail any of the sections pretty much everyone there is able to relate to me in some way. The only problem is the one person who passed all 4 sections the first time just so happens to be the one person who asks everyone who is in the CPA exam process "did you get your grade yet?" like every other day. I feel like she WANTS everyone to fail a part so she can feel like she's better than you.
However the good that comes out of that is it motivates me even more. The problem is I've been studying for 4 months straight now, it's busy season, and I'm completely worn out, plus the damn NCAA tournament is going on right now, so all the motivation in the world is not doing a whole lot for me at the moment. I think I've studied a grand total of one hour in the past 10 days, lol. Signing up for a test on the 19th of April is one of the dumbest mistakes I've ever made!!!

He wanted to take the CPA exam just to prove he could pass it back when it was still a 2-day ordeal. He failed and said he'd never take it again because quote: "The only thing I got from it was hemorrhoids".

offlineMemberWell just a couple of days ago I ordered Yaeger BEC Cram, but the next day I called to cancel my order because I already had the homestudy...anyways I thought the cram would be something different than what it really is. Anyways, yesterday I got an email confirming my cancellation, including this wording:
"...we will cancel the order, however I think it is a big mistake. Not a good idea to ignore the advice of someone in this business for 33 years."
I never had any problems w/ Yaeger, however I don't think that was a very appropriate way to handle business. Especially considering I have dropped nearly $1200 on their homestudy program. But hey, thanks for the vote of confidence!

offlineMemberfinanceguy, I see your point, but you are lucky Yaeger cancelled your order, I had a similar situation wiht BISK and they basically told me to go fly a kite, (BISK is the worst) and my friend had the same problem with Becker...I think Yaeger has the best customer support than all the other review courses...I think he was just being honest and speaking his mind.......you shouldn't take it the wrong way...

offlineMemberIt was his wife. If you make a quality product, then you should have no problems w/ customer returns. I am not criticizing the quality of the product - I like it. However, I just felt that I really didn't need the Cram course. I cancelled less than 24 hours after I had ordered. Yaeger is not out anything...I'm paying the shipping.
Why is it that here in America, as a consumer, you must feel as very fortunate to be able to return a product that you simply just didn't want? Why has business come to that? Why is there so much fine print in everything? Why do you have to be weary of nearly anything you buy?
You may look at it as I am lucky because none of the other review courses offer refunds. I look at it as why has business in this country fallen to such low levels?
You know I had a review course before Yaeger - Genesis CPA Review, and they were supposed to have live classes. Long story short they cancelled classes because of lack of enrollment. I paid for this review 2 months prior to starting classes - $1400. They never answered my calls, just kept giving me the run around. Luckily my credit card gave me the refund. Apparently they screwed over a lot of people.
The consumer is constantly being screwed by businesses these days. I love business, and I am a HUGE supporter of good business people. I will say, everything up to that email yesterday was EXCEPTIONAL with yaeger. There simply was no need for that comment. But now you can tell the negative impact it has left on me.

offlineMemberFL CPA, oh my God that is my biggest complaint in the testing process. People are like well you don't need to study the week of the exam...you'll just psych yourself up too much. This advice coming from a friend who has not studied since AP exam in highschool & coasted thru college with a 2.8. Better yet, when you fail your exam by mere point or two & they say ugh so this means you are going to be a loser for another 2 months? Seriously? Yeah I'm choosing to not have a life for the half of the year plus that I've been studying every day. I try not to get mad b/c people don't understand, and I've learned not to discuss the exam with ANYONE b/c someone (parents included) is always going to have a better strategy.

From now on, just smile knowingly when your senior partners BRAG about how they passed the old exam. I passed the exam over 20 years ago under the paper and pencil version. My reason for retaking this monster now is long and involves family, money and priorities, but doesn't really matter in making my point.
And my point is: I want everyone that is taking the current CPA exam to KNOW that this exam is every bit as difficult (maybe more) than the old pencil and paper version. Lets see where I can begin... When I passed it years ago there were approximately 86 SFASs, today there are approximately 186 as of June 2009. We did not have SOX. Yes, you had to study for all the parts until you got "conditioned" but in contrast, you had 3 months on and 3 months off of studying, which gave you some semblance of a life. If anyone cares, let me know and I will go on. But for the rest, when some smart#$$ comments about how the old version was some how harder, more intense, blah, blah, blah...smile and KNOW that they are full of it!!!!!

offlineMemberI stopped telling my coworkers what my exam dates are when I realized this puts extra pressure on me. Especially when I had to tell them I failed one of the exams. I told them I will tell them when I pass all parts and I will just take my time with the whole process. It is not anybody's business to know the exact timing of your exams. I told them I am qualified for my job and passing the cpa is not a prerequisite for my job. From your posts I can infer that no matter what people say and how good intentions they have, cpa candidates get annoyed and irritated. So it is better to not even talk about it until we pass and show up one day at work and announce: I passed all 4!!! Also, try to remember the feelings you have now so that you are not one of those "mean" people later when you are a cpa...

I try to explain that BEC is way different, it historically has the lowest pass rate, and that I slacked off because the weather was nice while I was studying so I couldn't focus, busy season was over so I was "celebrating" a lot, and I was so burnt out from doing this crap for 6 months straight that I didn't care any more, but people just keep saying "I know you passed!"
I know they're just trying to help but seriously, that is annoying! There's enough pressure involved in this process and they're not helping! If I end up failing I'm going to go up to everyone who told me that and tell them "see, I didn't pass! Thanks a lot! You were wrong, now shut up!" : )

offlineMemberI once had a friend's dad (a CPA) tell me that he had heard from a friend who had taken both, that the CPA is tougher than the Bar Exam. Of course, at the time I doubted that was possible, and my lawyer-to-be friends and I chuckled a "yeah right..." Well, I'm a little over a year into the CPA, and I can tell you that - as it's currently structured (not even getting into the merits of the "all at once" CPA from the old days vs. the 4-sections-that-last-an-entire-lifetime CPA with some colleagues from work) - the CPA is way tougher than the Bar.
The funny thing is that when I tell my lawyer friends that I'm still taking the CPA I always get a "shouldn't you be done with that?" look from them.

offlineMemberI have had a lot of stupid things said to me over the last three years, but my favorite is an in-law that compares the CPA to this person getting their hospital coding certificate. It is an open book test first of all, and not that long. Certainly not even in the spectrum, but they think it is and...they don't understand why I just can't pass.
I like this forum. I never post to it because it seems like every day that someone says some horrific thing to me that makes me cringe. Or I have been at it too long and just blow by the comments now. This thread makes me laugh because I can't believe how many things that come out of peoples mouth that are the exact same stupid questions / comments that I have heard. Keep posting!
I know, they don't know what it is like to be a candidate and I could be understanding to that, but it is hard when they think it is so easy.

I work with a couple of 'seasoned' accountants who took the exam back in the day (barefoot and uphill both ways as someone previously said.) One of them, after I explained that its now given via computer, said "oh, so you can just take it at home and use your books?"
No, man, can't do that.
I am supported by coworkers (they all took it right after college before they started working, and one even said he gives anyone a ton of credit who can work full time and prepare for the exam). But I do get sick of being asked EVERY SINGLE DAY: "When's your next exam?" "Did you get your score yet?" "Did you get your score yet?" "Did you get that score yet?" "Hey did you pass the exam you took last month?"
I accidentally snapped at a good friend of mine today - "WHEN I KNOW, YOU'LL KNOW!!!"
Or how about "come out and have a couple of drinks with us - you need a study break!"
And yes, the patronizing stuff is also irritating. "You're smart, you'll do fine." "You're working so hard, you definitely passed it." "Stay positive!!"
People absolutely cannot relate to this process unless they've gone through it, which is why this website is so great!
