Sorry everyone but I need to vent a bit.

My husband has been very supportive and patient with me studying but sometimes he’ll say something to tick me off. Tonight we were having a little family time with our girls and watching the Buffalo Sabres game on tv and we were chit chatting about something, I can’t remember what, but my exams came up. Then he asked me “Are you still going to be sitting for these exams 20 years from now if you don’t pass?”

That hurt!! I called him on that too. I said “That question is like stabbing me in the back and twisting it.” I know he hates his job and he’s a little down since he hurt himself at work, but that was totally uncalled for.

Here I am running on little sleep and working my tail off to pass these exams and I get that!!!

My daughter has my back though. She said “Dad, Mom’s going to pass this year and we are going to Disney to celebrate.” I promised her a while back that once Mommy done with all this studying we’ll take a family trip to Disney.

That’s my goal, besides the the little letters after my name.

Started sitting in May 2002, on and off. But since 2008 I've been nonstop and my scores are....
    AUD - 39, 48, 56, 65, 68, 73, 76!!! (Finally passed in Oct 2011!!!) Becker, NINJA, & Wiley
    REG - 75 (Lost Credit) 72, 68, 73, 75 (Passed again in Aug 2011) Becker, NINJA, & Wiley
    FAR - 65, 68, 75 (Lost Credit) 68, 73, 73, 80 (Passed again in May 2012) Roger, NINJA, & Wiley
    BEC - 65, 68, 71, 72, 72, 71, 76 (Lost Credit)- 70, 76!!!! I AM DONE!!! - Roger, NINJA, & Wiley
After 10 long years of studying, I AM DONE!!!! Finally a Licensed CPA in the State of New York!!

We all need to vent sometimes! Sounds like your husbands just down about himself. Wouldn't stay upset for too long. And after all, we all have your back. =)

Tell him, “either you be patient, be supportive until I get my 3 letters, or I can give you 7 right now.”

    …anyone get it? 😉

PS – Your daughter is so sweet! Screw the cranky husband and keep your daughter in mind when you're in need of motivation!

    Jomarie,

UGH. What a bummer way to spend a Friday night. I can totally empathize with you. It sucks to know that the support isn't as strong as some of our other “classmates”. I would trade with them anytime. But, in the meantime, don't let his comments take you off of your path. I am one of those people who wear their hearts on their sleeve–don't be that way! Don't allow yourself to turn down the heat on your studying–keep it going strong. I guess as much as we need support, our husbands, kids, and family need some too. My husband just reminded me of that this morning. So, take his comment with a grain of salt, he must have needed to let off some steam–take it that way. Working full time with little ones is stressful, and with your husband traveling hours to and from work –that can't make it any easier. Chalk it up to you and your hubby being in a frenzied chaotic stage of your lives, with a little more elbow grease, you will be done. I think you mentioned when you finish, your firm was interested in making you a partner? WOW, what motivation–keep that in your back pocket Jomarie!!! That is a huge testament and compliment to your capabilities and value to your firm.

We all are here for you, and we are cheering for you as well. I can't wait to congratulate you when you are done–I look forward to that post.

    Today will be better!!!!

    @jomarie

Is it possible that the Sabres put him in a bad mood and you got to feel the wrath of it? Maybe you should look into converting to a Nashville Predators fan :). It could help ease the tension since they're so fun to watch. Defense anyone?

Yeah it could have something to do with the Sabres too!! They didn't play well last night.

Hey don't let it get to you, as other people say, he was probably upset about some other stuff.

It's so sweet that your daughter's really rooting for you!

People say stuff they don't mean when in a bad mood…still owes you an apology but I'll say this…people can't possibly understand (unless you've taken the exams yourself), that these are not the type of exams that you just study and if you studied pretty hard, you pass.

LOTS of people study extremely hard for many many hours and don't pass. Then if you don't pass, you start all over again for a specific section. It's absolutely brutal.

That being said, when it is done, what a personal accomplishment it will be. For myself, this is going to be as big an accomplishment as any in my life.

eartzi you are SO right about what an accomplishment this is/will be. My family & friends ask me if I am going to walk at the ceremony next May for finishing my Masters in December or if I will have a graduation party. I tell them no, the masters is small potatos next to the CPA exam and I DO want a ceremony that rivals the royal wedding for that!

@jomarie…just understand that we (men) are a bunch of a****les……My family thinks the CPA exam is just a regular exam. 99% of the time I'm studying thry go in the room and start talking even when I tell them not to even open the door… Sometimes I wish I lived all by myself…but then…they are my family…..so yeah it sux sometimes…lol

It sucks but until you can't understand this experience without going through it. Ignore it and worry about whatever topic you have been having trouble with. That's the best way to make this problem one in your past.

I was looking for a thread that I could do a little rant on so I suppose this one will do. I get a phone call from my dad this afternoon asking if I would like to go to my nephew's school concert. I started a new section of BEC today (Financial Planning and Analysis) so I told him that I would love to but I can't because I need to stay on top of my studying now that I'm only 15 days from my exam date. I also mentioned that I was really struggling with the variance analysis and this is the reply that I got “When that happens doesn't it ever make you wonder that you went into the wrong field?”

What the hell is that?! I know he's mad at me because I'm not spending as much time with family members as I normally would but come on, was that really necessary?

    1. Being a jerk doesn't make me want to work extra hard on these MCQs so that I can sit at your kitchen table drinking my coffee while you ask me more stupid and rather insulting questions.

    2. Did I choose the wrong career path? Hmm…did you want me to move back home and let me take years to figure it out?

    3. Just because you sit for and pass these exam and become a CPA does NOT make you an expert. There is no possible way to know everything! Just because I don't know variances yet doesn't mean I will never know variance—and even if I don't understand them completely doesn't mean that I'm not qualified to become a CPA!

Thank you, that is all… 🙂

As a guy, I can really and truly say that there is a lot less rolling around in these brains of ours than you ladies give us credit for.

    I'm sure he was kidding.

My wife said something similar in that I haven't been as gun ho this time….I was like “I have been working 80 hour weeks and my Mom died the day after Easter….who could be?” 😀 Oh well, she didn't mean it either.

There is definitely a lot less rolling around in his brain, haha. I wouldn't have been as upset if there was a little chuckle afterwards but this was more of a “Are you sure you're cut out for this?” type of question. It's just tough to swallow when I've only sat for one exam and haven't even received a score yet–he's already raining on my parade! He's also been making other little snide remarks that I've let roll off my shoulder but it seems every time I talk to him it's one after the other….I just wish he would stop being so hard on me and be less judgmental or that I stop caring about what he thinks/says—whichever comes first is fine by me! 🙂

My dad has been saying to me “oh maybe they don't want you to be licensed” they meaning the AICPA. I once told him that my one boss's son passed all 4 parts on the first try, he said “oh he must know someone high up in the AICPA.” Those are the times I wish my mom was still around cause she would put him in his place.
