Surgery

Has anyone on here had surgery while preparing for the CPA exams? How did it affect your study schedule, and/or how long did it take before you were feeling well enough to start studying again? I am having surgery on Friday, and although it is “only” an outpatient surgery, I have given myself Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off from studying. Obviously, the experience varies for everyone, but do you think I will be feeling well enough to start studying again on Monday?

I had surgery during the first time I took BEC. It is a surgery that I have had before…with a very easy, quick recovery time round 1. I assumed the same, took off only Friday from work, thinking I could study all that weekend. I ended up taking off an entire week from work, not studying at all. Every surgery is different, as is every recovery. If the issue of my surgery returns, I'll unfortunately have to cut out a good 2-3 weeks recovery, so hopefully that doesn't happen. Good luck with recovery! 🙂

In my opinion, it depends on the surgery and how invasive it will be. The main factor to consider will be the pain meds and now long you will be on them. They make you loopy and you can't really retain info if you study while using them. If you are just going to be in bed resting with ibuprofen, I would consider that quality study time. Plan for the worst and hope for the best. =)

Good luck to you! What date is your surgery? MIne is Oct 16th! Ugh…

Thanks both of you for the feedback! Hope your issue doesn't recur, oilgaslb! 🙁

@BaxterCPA my surgery is Friday, September 13th. I'm hoping the whole Friday the 13th thing isn't a bad omen. 😛 Forgot about the pain meds… I was told I would be on stronger meds than just ibuprofen, so that could set me back a little. Thankfully, I've gotten through the AUD lectures and am just in review mode now. Exam is October 1st, so I'll have two chances to go through the material, doing one module a day. If I'm loopy the first time around, at least I'll have a second chance! Good luck on your surgery, BaxterCPA!

I had outpatient surgery while in school full time. Came to classes starting next day and all albeit in pain. It did not affect my cognitive skills b/c I chose not to take painkillers (get adverse reaction to them) but used 600mg ibuprofen.

Now, this outpatient procedure can not be compared to another outpatient procedure that had kept me in hospital for additional 1 day and in bed for another week. Just went wrong for some reason although doctor said there were no complications. That time I was on vacation and barely made it to work in time.

@Barely, good luck to you on this procedure! Remember to take vit C (ester C 500mg x 2) a week prior for faster healing.
