    Hi,

I got the offer for the BIG 4 in Texas starting this September and I graduate in May (with the 150 hours/double major). I want to start the CPA exam ASAP (I know there’s some changes in JULY). Would it be possible IF I take the CPA exam under Hawaii’s jurisdiction (meet the requirement and less than 120 days from graduation), get the license in Hawaii and transfer it to Texas (reciprocity)? Will it work?

    Thanks!!

If you meet all the requirements of TX, apply to TX. Its ok to take the exam at any Prometric so as long as you've got a Prometric you can get to you need not be a HI candidate.

You should also look into the steps Texas will require you to go through to get a license after you get the HI license. Considering TX is a difficult state to do business with, it might be way more work than “please move my license from HI to TX :)” It might actually be less of a pain to just wait until you're able to sit in TX.

They might have different experience requirements, extra fees, etc. It does kind of suck that we all take a similar exam and most states have now adopted the 150 credit hours but a CPA license from one state is not always recognized in another state. I wish it were more like a driver's license where all you had to do was drive into the new state and you would be fine. But, since doctors, nurses, lawyers can't do that, I understand why the states wouldn't want CPAs to be able to do that.

Another alternative would be to spend those 120 days.. I know it seems like a lot to start studying for FAR without your exam date planned yet. FAR takes the most time so it might be nice to have some extra time before your clock starts on the 18 month thing and your software clock starts on your materials.

    Thanks guys,

Some of the courses that I am taking at my uni will not qualify for Texas (ethics course) therefore, I would have to take extra courses (in that case, I won't be able to sit for the CPA until after I finish the required courses), so I think that option is out.

In addition, I will only have 27 Accounting Credits when I graduate ( I had to drop a course due to unforeseen circumstances) ….

I will be out of the country for a month this summer as well, and I would like to start the CPA ASAP.

I just don't want the CPA requirements to screw over my career…
