Taking the CPA exam while in school?

I am going to graduate with my Bachelors in Accounting in December. I am starting my MACC in January, and have an internship lined up with a public accounting firm for next summer. After the spring semester, I’ll have all the requirements to take the CPA exam (in KS). My question is do you think it would be possible to do well to start and take two sections while doing my internship, then try to finish it out while I’m in my last semester of school? I’m planning on going in to public accounting and am afraid that by graduating in December and jumping right into tax season I will not have time until summer 2014 to really get after it and that is just too long to wait.

    Your timeline is:

    Fall: Bachelors

    Spring: First semester of MACC.

Summer: Internship & 1st time eligible to sit for CPA exam.

    Fall: Second semester of MACC

January – Hopeful start date at accounting firm.

Right? You can do whatever you want but it doesnt have to be all or nothing. Maybe 1 in summer, 1 in fall & then worry about the other 2 sections after busy season.

    REG - Passed!!
    BEC - Passed
    FAR - Passed
    AUD - Passed

    Study Materials: Becker basic course

I graduated in may, took summer school to get to 150 hours and took FAR over the summer. I'm doing the rest before I start in January, I would do one during summer and one during fall, with one right before you work. Just hit library for the month of decmber and study weekends for the one before you start in January. Give up the social life and commit yourself to it because it will be worth it in the long run and remind yourself about that bonus haha the Macc classes are just chum in the water, catch yourself something you'd throw up on fire place…..the knowledge is fresh, less study time required too

You will get full time offer after internship baring anything really bad happening, that was the trend I noticed at N. Illinois. I didn't personally do that but all my friends got full time offers at the conclusion of their internship(audit, tax). I did industry then interviewed for public accounting. Learned a lot about business as an entire process, flow charting SAP implementation. Excited to do public though. Best of luck and hope you get some exams out of the way!

You're on essentially the same path I'm taking. I became eligible this summer at the end of July and promptly took AUD and BEC in August. Studied 6 weeks for FAR (hopefully passed), and I am currently studying for REG at the end of November.

It's not as daunting as you may think. I'm in my last semester of my MAcc and essentially just view studying as my job this semester. Put in the time and there is no reason you can't finish before you start working next January. I'm also in the same general area as you…live in Kansas City and taking my exams in MO.

@Jeff- It's a good thing you put State at the end of that, I'm not sure we could be friends if you were a KU fan! EMAW 🙂

Thanks everyone for the input, I really think ill try to get started on it before I am done with school. I just wanted a few more opinions because I'm pretty sure my advisor is going to encourage me to wait until I've competed my MAcc.

    K-State Alumni in the house!

I didn't take any of the tests while still in school but quite a few of the other people who just started with me in October took that route and managed to pass one or two.

You could take the route I did. Finish your spring internship, get in Becker FastPass over the summer (at KU – blah) and then start knocking out the tests mid-June through the end of July. It's going to be the worst couple of months in your life – but I still managed to pass 3 of the 4. If you had one done already that's just additional study time.

    AUD – 96

    FAR – 84

    BEC – 79

    REG – 74 – GAH!

It's nice to know I'm in good company with fellow Wildcats!

I really think I'll go for it and try to take two sections this next summer while doing my internship, and then see where I'm at as far as next fall semester. Thanks for your help!
