I’m considering doing the taxes for a few of my friends this upcoming tax season. I work in the tax department of a firm and they use prosystems but I”m going to be doing these returns on my own on the side. Does anyone have any suggestions on what software to use and how much it will be. Am I charged based on the number of returns I do?

I use Lacerte now and I have used Ultra Tax in the past. Ultra Tax is awesome and very expensive. I am also considering buy Lacerte to do my own return and family/friends this coming tax season. From what I see you pay a software fee and then efile charges for each individual you file. From what I have head Lacerte is a step up from Prosystems, but both are Inuit products. See if your firm can get you a discount when you buy it.

EDIT: I am sorry Proseries is Intuit not Prosystem.

I use taxwise, a cch product. It works very well for me. I purchase a full packages, 1040, all states and all corporate and not for profit returns. Efile is included. Some complain about the customer service during the beginning of the tax season, but I have used this about 10 years.

    It begins with a 75

I used TaxAct and I liked it. But it was a few years ago so I don't remember the price, etc. The info should be on their website.

If you have only a few friends, you can use that site for free but make them sign the returns. That's what we did for VITA.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

I see you guys are mentioning different software, which all costs around $1k. Since he/she is doing friends taxes on the side wouldn't turbotax do the job for under $150? Am i missing something that these softwares provide that turbotax doesn't?
