    Hello everyone…

I just took my last exam 11/19…so while I wait for my score I thought I’d get some much needed career advice.

My husband, who majored in CJ in undergrad, took his first intro to accounting class earlier this year…I of course helped him out on concepts he didn’t understand. It felt great! …and he got an A by the way 🙂

So now I feel like I can teach and I actually enjoy the idea of teaching an intro to accounting class. I feel there was so much my professors missed the opportunity to tell me. They could’ve made understanding accounting much easier if they hadn’t depended on the textbook so heavily and actually TAUGHT!

Anyway, is there anyone else out there who is teaching. What are some things I need to know if I’m going to pursue this? I still want to keep my 9-5 and teach part time…is this realistic?

I think teaching is a great idea……And you're right so many depend upon the textbook and the answers until they forget to teach how to get the answer. I thought about teaching Accounting but I also thought about college students…..I have three in my home and I can just imagine their class mates…….just don't know if I can deal with the young people hormone syndrome…….maybe I can find an online class.

    It begins with a 75

Some of my best “professors” were CPAs with no PhDs; I took a banking seminar course from an FDIC auditor and advanced accounting from a former PwC Sr Manager who now has his own firm.

So I think its a great idea if you can squeeze it into your schedule, I'm also considering moonlighting as a lecturer, but that will have to be once I leave public lol. I'd even consider going FT at a university, but the business PhD is a pretty high hurdle (and kinda silly, CPA+MBA > PhD, IMO.)

CPA4birthdaypresent – Go for it! I occasionally see job ads to teach for smaller universities and community colleges. Lots of people teach at night and work during the day. It is a great set up because you have a working perspective to bring to teaching.

One of my favorite professors in grad school ran his tax practice during the day and presented his tax return scenarios at night so “we could solve it together”. It was a great approach and he would act like he was researching the answer for the first time and the students were helping him solve his real world problems. Great method for making boring tax research interesting, even though he actually could have answered all of the problems in his sleep.

Great question! I have thought about teaching as a supplemental income resource. I think I can teach undergraduate classes with an MBA and hopefully CPA (soon, very very soon). I am interested in hearing all the responses for this.

The general rule is that you can teach one level below your degree. A Bachelor degree can teach high school, Master's can teach undergrad, etc. Some times, schools will allow people to teach at the same level if they have unique experience.

My dream is to teach later in my career.

I've been checking some of the qualification reqs for a part time community college instructor and it appears that as a general rule they do want you to have your Masters…but they also state that a BA with a CPA would be acceptable as well…and hopefully I'll be able to fulfill that CPA requirement shortly.

For intro to accounting, I think a BA with a CPA should be sufficient…right?

Sounds like a great idea! I totally agree with acamp. My favorite Accounting instructor was not a PhD. She taught the lower level accounting courses and had real world experience. She is probably the reason I decided on Accounting, well there may have been some other factors, but before her classes I was not planning on majoring in Accounting.

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.
