Texas candidates – here is the Texas licensing timeline

    I thought I’d post a fairly detailed timeline on the Texas licensing process as I was very impatient on waiting for this after all the other waiting this process entails. Hopefully this will be helpful to some of you Texas candidates about to go through the process.

    – 2014 – passed the exam

    – 9/10/15 – Had my fingerprints done at IdentoGo and sent to the Board. I also took this opportunity to have the Oath of Office notarized as they typically have a notary on site. Make sure to do this prior to sending everything in so the process isn’t delayed for you. I also did the four hour ethics course on this day to get it over with.

    – 9/30/15 – The Board received the items listed below once the work experience requirement of 1 year was satisfied:

    – Application for Issuance

    – $50 check for the certification fee

    – Notarized Oath of Office

    – Work experience form filled out by employer

    – ***Job description for my position which was provided by my employer when they returned the form***

    – Form from IdentoGo that they let you leave with, just so the Board can confirm that they should have the prints by now

    – Certificate of completion of the required four hour ethics course

    – 10/5/15 – Received Rules of Professional Conduct exam via email. I completed and returned it the same day (required to return it within 48 hours).

    – 10/6/2015 – Emailed Board contact to ask about the exam, and was informed that I passed. My online profile was also updated to show that the Board received by certification fee on 9/30.

    – 10/14/15 – All other fields on my online candidate profile were updated (rules of professional conduct score, months of experience, etc) except for the certificate name field

    – 10/16/15 – Received an email from the Board that my license was approved along with my license number, and the email included a notice to go online and pay a licensing fee ($38). The email stated that once I paid the fee, the following business day the license would show up as “issued” on the Board’s site.

    ***Important note here – I called the Board and you are technically not allowed to refer to yourself as a CPA until the site updates your license status as “issued” on that next business day. This is done automatically on the next business day after you receive your email, so there’s no waiting around for someone to update this manually.

    – 10/19/15 – License status was updated to issued and my name/license info appeared on the site’s license lookup function.

    In total it took roughly 2 and a half weeks from the time they received my application packet to the time I was able to call myself a CPA. Good luck to everyone.

    “Certificate of completion of the required four hour ethics course” – can you provide more details about the ethics course? Was it online one? How long did it take to complete it and where? Thanks!
