@OneStepAwayCPA - It took me a few days. Some of the questions only took 5 minutes, but the majority took me at least 10 minutes (I was at work and had a lot of distractions, plus I triple checked every answer). The California Ethics exam is 50 questions so.. let's say I averaged 10 minutes per question... that's over 8 hours to finish.

I know what you mean about it being overwhelming. It was definitely more time consuming than I expected it to be.

Hey another California CPA applicant here. I took the ethics exam online, I had no idea it would be so difficult. It took me a full workday to finish it so about 8 hours + lunch. Passed on the 1st try!

Update - Last night I received got a letter from the California Board of Accountancy saying that they received my application. On the same day I also got a letter saying that I'd passed all sections of the CPA exam (yay, posted on Facebook) and a reminder to do a bunch of things to get licensed, which I already did last week.

Oh and I ALSO got a letter included with my congratulatory letter which says I'm going to get a refund for $50 (which I requested) since I had already applied for a new NTS because I was so sure that I had failed REG. :-)

Did the letter say anything other then they recieved your app? I sent all the required info to the CBA last week. Hopefully since i sent it all together, they can process it faster.

@mep616 - Here's a list of exactly what I received:

1) A yellow postcard which says that they received my application and it will be processed, and not to call since they won't give status updates on the phone.
2) In an envelope: A congratulatory letter which lists out the things that everyone needs to do in order to get licensed. It was a generic letter - I think it would have said the exact same thing no matter what application stuff they have received from me.
3) In the same envelope: A letter stating that I will be getting a $50 refund within the next month or so

That's it. I didn't get a status update on what they have or haven't received.

Congratulations to all those who have passed recently. I no longer surf Another71.com as I had in the past but Jeff and others such as Allyson played a huge part during my CPA journey that I will always visit from time to time more so around score release time. The feeling of becoming a CPA was great as you all probably feel now. Whyeventry-I love the baby picture (I have six kids) and Allyson-I see you went back to your original picture which is just adorable. Congrats again to everyone and it was worth it for me and it will be for you too. There are so many life lessons you will learn as a result of your journey and I try to pass mine on to those I encounter who are taking the CPA exam. I feel I am just passing on what Jeff and others on Another71.com had passed on to me. It has been awhile since I have posted, but Jeff I will always be greatful for how you help me on my journey.

Yes, I will have to repay to get my fingerprinting done. It's not that expensive, but it is a huge hassle. I'll also need to stop payment on the check I wrote to the board.

I haven't sent my licensing application in yet. I'm holding off this time until I have everything ready to go. All I need now are the fingerprint cards and a passport photo. I should be able to get my fingerprinting done this week if I receive the new set of cards from the board.

I'm also still working on the ethics test. So far I've completed 22 questions. I'm just so not motivated right now. Sigh. You'd think I'd be a bit more eager to put this behind me. Part of my problem is knowing that the board can take up to 4 months to process my fingerprints.

Congrats to everyone who's done...I passed REG in the last window to finish and It's just now starting to sink in. I turned the paperwork in within a week of receiving my last score. Then I found out a bottleneck with the exam folks sending the grades. I was told they're in no hurry....good grief!

Now that testing is all over we're all set to go, right? WRONG! I sent all my stuff in to the board, got approved, paid them money, and as of early Sept I've been a CPA! YAY! Except I just got another letter in the mail saying that my license now expires on 12/31/11 and I need to send in $120 more...

Good thing I paid $60 to be a CPA for 3 months... lame.

Yeah Allyson, I think I've actually been just as exhausted as I was before I found out that I passed. I've been trying to deal with all the things that I put off because of my exam... like planning my wedding, home improvements, reconnecting with old friends. It's much better than studying, that's for sure - but still tiring!

I know what you mean. Two years of procratinating on personal and work projects has caught up with me and I'm wearing myself out trying to play catch-up.

It is still sooooo much better than studying! Every time I think about it, I am grateful to be done.

@Allyson - That's awesome! I hope that you have a lot of fun. :) Did you contact the league? They might have spare skates and protective gear that you can use for your first few days, just to see if you like it. Make sure you bring a mouth guard (just a top teeth mouth guard is fine, you can get one for about $10). Let me know how it goes. :)

And remember, you will probably fall on your butt a lot for the first couple practices. It's normal. Don't give up. But also be careful because a broken tail bone is not a fun thing to have.

@markiux - LOL! Wouldn't that be something... I think we're actually going to elope and then plan a big BBQ at our house a little while later. I don't think that my house could fit all of the wonderful people I've met on these forums.

Since my fiance and I are paying for everything ourselves, we've decided to do it our way. And we want to have FUN on our wedding day! :-) Maybe run away to Lake Tahoe or something and get hitched, then go kayaking or on a long hike.. or both. Or maybe Disneyland?? Who knows... Then come home and plan a big casual party at my house.. flip flops encouraged, heels forbidden!

It should be a good time. I'm excited to start planning. :-) And excited to finally marry the poor guy that knows what he is getting into but for some reason still wants to marry me.

Just wanted to give everyone an update. I passed my last test in July and found out I passed on Sept 17th. I received my congratulatory letter in the mail yesterday from the TN saying that they have received all my scores. The letter also stated that I need to take the ethics exam (which I have already completed) and that once they receive that score they will send the application packet.

Have you thought about renting a vacation house in tahoe and having a small wedding/family weekend? I was thinking about that because its soooo expensive to rent a nice venue (like a country club, banquet hall or winery), but a vacation rental, even a large one with 4-5 bedrooms is way cheaper, and some have larger backyards or even lake front beaches for the ceremony. Also if you rent a vacation house you can cook/grill/bbq for everyone instead of paying for catering.

@Allyson - lol I know, skating takes a while to get comfortable with. I fell a lot when I first started. I'm so glad I stuck with it though because it's awesome now. I still get super sore after some of our practices though. It's a tough sport.

@COA2010TN - Congrats!!!

I'm still worn out too, but tonight I finally finished my ethics test! Work has been pure hell lately, which is why it took me so long. But I'm done! Let the recovery begin.

Hey T-rex, grats on getting that Ethics exam done. It's such a relief, isn't it? : ) What are you going to do with all your spare time now?

I was playing video games with my fiance this weekend (what can I say, I'm a nerd) and I just randomly turned to him and said "I can't believe that I passed REG!" lol I probably say that at least once per week. I'm still shocked!!! I was so sure that I had failed!

Hi, Kandis! Thank you! It is a relief. I feel like I'm finally really done, with the CA license anyway. TX may be another story, but I'm not going to worry about that just yet.

"We have now received all of the documents required to initiate the evaluation of your application for licensure.

Results of this review will be mailed to you in approximately 4 to 6 weeks. During this time, status reports will not be given."

Thanks guys :0) I wasn't trying to brag or anything, I just promised some folks on here that I would keep them updated on the whole application process.

@killaking - lol partying huh? Visiting with friends you haven't seen in a while or what?

There's still a small part of me that's terrified that my application will be denied. Like they'll find some random criminal activity that I don't even know about, or my education won't be good enough. Or that I didn't really pass REG and they got my score mixed up with someone else's. I know it's all extremely unlikely, but I will feel a lot better when my application is approved.

@kandisjoy, I'm afraid that any day now I'll get a call from the state board saying they made a mistake and some of my classes don't meet the requirement of 24 hours of accounting and 24 hours of business. I won't be easy til I have that piece of paper in my hand.

Just finished the fourth test (REG) and experiencing a withdrawal symptom :)
Anyway, taking the family to a well deserved vacation (Dominican Republic) for putting up with my schedule for the past 2 years.

How long did it take from the time you sent in your last application material did it take for you to receive that notice? I just sent in the reminder of my materials last week.

I, too, worry that they'll find a reason to turn down my license. I sure hope not though. As far as I can tell, I meet all of the requirements, so it's probably just irrational thinking taking over.

I hope it will be smooth sailing from here on out for those of us waiting for licensing.

@T-rex - Hi :) I mailed the last item on 9/29, and completed my ethics exam on 9/28. I got a little yellow postcard from them around 10/6 that said that they had received my application. The letter saying that they had received everything was dated 10/19.

I'm really enjoying not having to study.

I really, really love it. :o)

I get to read books on my lunch break instead of study. I get to play WoW (yeah I'm a nerd) on weekends and week nights. I get to make plans without consideration of when my next test date is.

And best of all.. in a few weeks (assuming the CBA approves my application).. I will be able to call myself a CPA!

UPDATE!

I received my letterstating that they have received notice that I have passeed all 4 exams along with the ethics exam and application for my license in the mail yesterday (10/27)! I filled it out this morning and sent it in! Hopefully I will be officially licensed in a few more weeks! At the bottom of the application it has an area for the CPA you have or are working for, to fill out your experience. (I am in TN) I have already printed out & sent in the experience application online so hopefully this will speed up the process.

I just got my letter from CA saying that they have received my licensing application. I mailed it in weeks ago.

The letter said that I would receive another letter in 30 days which would let me know if the need any more information from me. However, the letter also said that if I don't receive a letter in 30 days I will receive a letter in 60 days. It also said not to call or write to them about the application process or ask any questions!!

I figure the CA state board has like 3 employees working part time at this point. Any one have any experience with how long it takes California to certify you?

Boy, I really feel for you guys on your licensing process. I am from Indiana and it took exactly 11 days from the time I mailed in my application to have my license issued. I will say Indiana is cheap they only provided an email with my license number. The do not provide any certificate but you can purchase a professional looking one for 20+ dollars. Good Luck to everyone who trying to get their license. At least you have past the exams which is still the hard part. Once you meet all of your state requirements you will have those three letters CPA after your name.
