The worst exam experience ever!

I remember reading a post asking if studying for the exam could lead to divorce. In my case, it did. 1 exam passed, 3 failed. I sat for REG on a Saturday and one week later was packing my things into boxes. Having to leave the state I was in and transferring to a new state, I’ve battled through the job application process having my share of rejections and insulting job offers. Thankfully I found a new home and recently accepted a job offer from a great firm. Life is looking good again. Now it’s time to get back on that horse and prepare for my retakes.

As I sit here filling out my application for a new state, I have a question. Under the section where it says “Indicate the exams you are applying for” it has anther portion that says “Experience: This section only required for Public Accountant (PA) examination” followed by employer address and mailing address. Does this mean that in this state requires candidates to be working for a firm to sit for the exam? Also it has a notary certificate section. Where do I go to get something notarized?

    jnnthom,

The first time I took the CPA exam (6yrs ago). I was all in like the Spanish National team when they won the World cup in 2010. I was not working and taking one part every 2.5 months. I was studying about 10 hrs per day, and like I said before, I was all in. I passed FAR,REG,and BEC on my first try, and by the time I was ready to study for Audit, my ex-wife asked me for a divorce. Later I found out she was also cheating on me. I was not able to take Audit because of lack of concentration and Match.com. The rest is history and now Im starting from the beginning. The only thing I regret is not having been able to take finish Audit.

When I read the thread title, I was expecting a bad experience at Prometric, not divorce discussions. Sounds like you guys have had a rough time. As a fellow divorced person, I am here to tell you it will get better. However, studying can be hell for the dating life.

jnnthom – I would recommend calling your state board to ask about the forms. Your bank will usually notarize forms or you can pay one of mailbox shipping stores.

Wow. That really sucks. I had to go through divorce myself but fortunately it was before I started my MSA. I'd recommend concentrating fully on the CPA exam before you start dating again. I got distracted last year by some guy who ended up being a pathological liar so I wasted my time with him instead of studying. I decided not to make this mistake again and my 2013 is all about the CPA exam and no dating. But the good part is, I'll be done soon and then I can fully concentrate on myself and finding the right person.

    Hang in there!

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

Just wanted to chime in and say I feel your pain. My boyfriend of seven years and I broke up due in part to my constant, incessant studying for the CPA exam, and the fact that he neither understood nor respected what I was trying to do for my career. It does cause a lot of stress on our loved ones, but you have to do what is best for you in the long run.

    Maybe A71 needs a dating section…just kidding! 😉

    BEC: (4/2012) 88
    AUD: (5/2012) 91
    REG: (8/2012) 82
    FAR: (1/2013) 78 🙂

That's actually a really interesting comment, Keely. Does anyone know someone who met a significant other on A71? Or has anyone ever met a boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife at the testing center? My roommate is a doctor and when he took his boards at Prometric he ended up grabbing drinks with a few other people he met there who were also taking their boards. He didn't end up with a girlfriend out of it, but I'm sure there are some interesting stories that people have about it.

    AUD: Attempt 1: 60; Attempt 2: 78
    BEC: Attempt 1: 75 (lost credit); Attempt 2: 80
    FAR: Attempt 1: 74; Attempt 2: 74; Attempt 3: 78
    REG: Attempt 1: 76 (lost credit); Attempt 2: 68; Attempt 3: 80

    Finished 11/01/2013!!!

I hate to hear of so many stories of couples splitting up because of studying for the CPA exam. I definitely see how lucky I am that my husband has been so supportive. We have a deal that once I pass the CPA, I support him taking the A&P exams. (That's Airframes and Powerplants for aviation mechanics) I have only taken 2 parts, which I failed. So, back to square one. BEC for the 2nd time 12-5-13.

Good comments by Keely and mrogovitz. I am sorry to hear your struggles. It is tough to juggle a love life with the CPA exams. I would advise not getting back into dating until you complete the exams. If you are already in a relationship, I will constantly talk to your partner about the good things that would happen once you pass the exams. Good luck with your tests.
