So I found out yesterday that I failed FAR for a 4th time, got a 69. Had just a 4 point increase from the last time I took it. I will now lose my AUD credit on 8/31. I am really bummed out and wanted to quit the CPA exam as of yesterday. After giving it some thought, I have decided to take REG (I am half-way through the material) since I cannot get my money back for the exam fees and course. I actually like tax, so it may be something I want to do in the future.

I have been at this for close to 3 years now and am getting tired, but I think I need to at least try and do the best I can on REG. What would you do if you were in my position? Does anyone have any study tips for REG and FAR?

    FAR - 76
    AUD - 88!!! DONE!!!!!!!!
    BEC - 76
    REG - 77

    never, never, never give up

Stick with it, you can do it.

Your signature says “never, never, never give up”. Don't ever go back on your word.

    AUD: April 2014 - 85
    REG: May 2014 - 83
    BEC: July 2014 - 82
    FAR: August 2014 - 83

    I'M DONE!!

@Tootsie Whatever you do don't give up. You even say so in your signature line. I certainly know and understand your frustrations, discouragement, weariness, etc. I took a total of 13 exams (AUD-2 62 & 78, BEC-4 68, 66 71 ,75, REG-4 55,64,68,78, FAR-3 65, 69,75) over a two and a half years. As you can see, with the exception of AUD, there were several occasions when I only increased my score by four points at a time, but I persevered. If I were you since you were really close on FAR, I would reschedule that REG exam(if your NTS permits) and take FAR at the beginning of the next testing window and the immediately start studying for REG again.

Give me some information on how you are studying now and I hopefully can give you some input on what I did.

Are you taking an exam EVERY testing window?

@candothis, I am taking an exam every testing window. My studying techniques are watching the lectures, reading the book, taking notes, and doing the multiple choice questions and sims in Becker. I also do progress tests after each chapter.

I really want to take REG on 8/29 while it is still fresh in my head. I think a month would be enough time to study for my FAR retake and I would take it the first week of October.

    FAR - 76
    AUD - 88!!! DONE!!!!!!!!
    BEC - 76
    REG - 77

Having just passed REG, make sure you know basis thoroughly as well as those dreaded SIMs.

And don't skimp on the B Law chapters.

Well I know the politically correct answer is “don't give up”, “you can do it”, and similar crap. To be honest, what you need to do, is ask yourself if practising as a CPA or even working within a related area is something you want to do. If you think all this suck, is boring, does not make sense and so on, then perhaps this is not for you and you should do something else instead. I am not saying that is necessarily the case just becouse you failed FAR four times, I am just saying you should definately consider it. There could be other reasons for failing, such as a busy life or too few hours spent on studying, what do I know – you know though, so take that into account in the analysis and make up your mind as to whether or not you really want that CPA (for other reasons than putting it on a piece of paper you call your resume).

And when you have made up your mind, then spend the time required to pass, and pass this damn thing. Don't give up becouse you find it tough to pass, it is tough to pass, but if you really want to then you will and should make it.

Big 4 Audit Manager from Europe here to pass the CPA in the U.S. of A in 2014! Niiice!

    AUD - 95 / Jul 15 / 130h over 4 weeks
    FAR - 86 / Aug 14 / 240h over 4 weeks
    (11 week break)

    REG - 81 / Nov 14 / 200h over 4 weeks
    BEC - 87 / Nov 17 / 30 h over 2.5 days

It sounds like you are covering the material but just need to add a couple of techniques. I was suggesting putting REG off because you said you were only half way through the material and thought FAR would be more fresh.

Anyway, I want to offer a few suggestions. Yes it is imperative that you watch the lectures, do the MC, progress tests, etc. but sometimes more is needed. Trust me.

    1. Do you have a schedule of how you are studying? I have one of those dry erase boards. I would list each section of Becker on the left side and the tasks I wanted to complete across the top. Such as watch video, complete MC's, outline chapter, record note cards, on my voice recorder, complete the Becker Final Review lectures, MC, etc. It was a sort of grid if you can picture it like that. Each time I completed a task, I would check it off. This kept me on track and not jumping from one lecture to another and made sure I covered everything.

    2. Go through your book and WRITE out anything and everything that Becker says to memorize from journal entries, mnemonics, formulas, examples of every type of BS, IS, in NFP, etc. EVERYTHING AND WRITE it out. This is going to be very time consuming. There is just something about putting a pencil to paper versus typing notes on a spreadsheet. I tried that and it didn't work. Actually I would have two identical lists. For example, on one list I would have a mnemonic of what would make up pension costs. On the second list, I would have the mnemonic listed but with blanks. I would then make multiple copies of those blank lists and give myself tests if you will.

    3. Take everything you have written out and record in some way. I used a voice recorder. This way you can always be studying whether it be in a car, doing laundry, mowing the lawn, at the beach and even at a NASCAR race.(true) For FAR, I used the NINJA audio at work and would listen to Jeff sometimes two and three times a day.

    4. If your financial situation allows, purchase Becker Final Review.

    5. When you start studying for FAR again, start from scratch as if you have never seen the material.

    6. How many hours are you studying per day and on the weekends? You may need to increase this.

    7. For a little inspiration, print out your scores from the NASBA website. Make copies of this and post it on the fridge,

cubicle at work, bathroom mirror, etc. That way everywhere you turn, you will see those passing BEC and AUD scores.

You have done it once with AUD and you can again. I started this once I passed AUD and now to this day have the final

print out taped to my cubicle right above my CPA license.

    8. For even more inspiration, go to the A71 passed I'm done thread and read some of those stories.

    9. Never under estimate the power of visualization and speaking words of victory over this exam. Visualize(imagine) yourself calling a friend and telling them that you made a 74 on BEC and let them say oh now. And then say 74 plus one. This very thing happened to me when I passed BEC. And don't say “if” I ever pass this exam but “when”.

I hope some of this helps. Best wishes on REG!

This is an exam that requires, desire, dedication, determination and discipline. You have all of these qualities. Just keep going.

Do you have NINJA MCQs? They allow you to break each topic down to a specific subtopic. Like you, I wasn't quite getting over the edge on the exams, so I obviously had holes in my knowledge on some topics. What I did was took notes, then worked all the Becker problems. I'd make flashcards on all the tricky topics, then repeated the MCQs again. I went onto only doing NINJA MCQs. I'd do them by subtopic. Seeing different questions on the same topic in a MCQs session allowed me to catch myself if I was learning a topic incorrectly.

I know the last thing you want to do when you're struggling is spend more money, but I feel it really might help you.

    Passed all sections.
