Throwing in the Towel…(please help)

I am very close to giving up on the whole CPA Exam process, and Accounting in general. Here’s why..

It’s 5:30am and I am studying so much, but getting nowhere. I already passed AUD and BEC in the 80/90s and took REG last week. So what’s the problem you ask?

I currently work for a Big 4, which thankfully gave me 7 weeks time off to study for the REG and FAR. My only problem is I do not feel that is enough time. I studied REG for 3 weeks and took the exam last week, but I have to wait until August 22nd to get my score back. In addition, I have only ONE month of full-time studying for FAR. Furthermore, my AUD expires 9/2. So basically, if I don’t pass FAR and REG by August, I have to retake AUD.

The problem is when I get back to work in September, I am on several busy jobs literally until the end of “busy season” in April/May. Not to mention, BEC expires in December. I tried to ask to get off them, but we are already understaffed.

Long story short, I don’t know if I can pass FAR in one month, I don’t know if I passed REG, but I do know my time is ticking and work is to busy for even the Jeff’s ELL method.

Any advice? I am seriously just thinking of quitting everything.

One month full time prep for FAR is plenty. Study all day. I am up since 4:00 am. Watch the lectures (I use Yaeger). The only way you will pass FAR is by not giving up and keeping these negative thoughts out of your mind and keep studying.

    FAR - 81 29th Aug 2013
    AUD - 84
    REG - 82
    BEC - 89 29th Aug 2014

This exam is tough. You have to be tougher. Sometimes you have to dig deep and just keep moving forward. Try to outline a reasonable schedule where you can be done with this thing by November. If that means only getting 5 hours of sleep at night then so be it. It's only temporary.

I think it makes more sense to give it all you've got (especially since you may only have one exam left) with the time you have left. I passed FAR in 6 weeks while working full time and in school part time. I think you could easily do it in 4 weeks with nothing else going on.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

I'm sorry but at this point you're in too deep. Quitting is no longer an option. Welcome to Hotel California

A month of full-time studying is more than enough for FAR. I studied for 2 months, but could only fit it in from 7-11 or 12 each night. You can do this!!!!

    Lol, don't quit. That's absurd.

You're 3 out of 4 in and you have a month off to study? Stop being a weenie and get back to studying. Geez. For all you know you passed REG. If you get a failing score back on Aug 22, then you're allowed to cry and post about giving up. Until then – suck it up and study for FAR.

Also, FYI, if you do fail REG and your AUD score expires. Then oh well. It sucks, but it's not the end of the world. People study and pass tests during busy season all the time. It's not a pleasant experience, but it can be done.

You can give up if you want, but all it will really do is make you sad as you watch all of the people around you get promoted over you and get better opportunities. It will make you even more sad when you lay awake at night and realize you gave up when you were essentially 75% through.

    REG - 94
    BEC - 92
    FAR - 92
    AUD - 99

Do you know how many of us would KILL to be in your situation?

    BEC-passed on 2nd attempt
    AUDIT- need a rematch
    REG-passed on 1st attempt
    FAR-schedule 10/2/14

    The nightmare is halfway over.

I encourage you not to throw in the towel. I am 43 years old and this is my second rodeo with the CPA exam, I started this Journey 17 years ago before my oldest son was born. After he was born, and three parts passed I gave up, decided I didn't need it or want it. Thought I knew that I would just be at home raising my kids and didn't really enjoy accounting anyways. Here I am 17 years later taking it ALL over again, it ALWAYS bothered me that I didn't finish what I started. This is what I constantly preach to my boys, finish what you start. So here I am at 43, working full time and raising three teenagers taking it. I have passed AUD and REG, waiting on the BEC which I retook in July after getting a 71 on the first time and taking FAR for the third time August 29th after two consecutive 74.

Perseverance develops character. Life never gets easier and there is always a BUSY season at work and outside of work. Do it now and be THANKFUL for the time you have to study even if its not as much as you think you need. Just don't be like me and look back and say I should have finished it THEN….

Good Luck YOU CAN DO THIS!

    Audit - 78
    REG - 53, 76
    BEC 71, 69 75
    FAR - 74, 74, 73, 79!!!

I give it less than a years time before you deeply regret it if you decide to give up. And you'll likely be pissed at yourself about it for the rest of your life.

You've already proven you can pass them, so it's only a matter of time before you knock 'em all out!

I don't get it. You'll periodically find posts on this forum where people are in really tough situations and have to seriously consider ending their pursuit of the CPA. This includes their marriage ending, family deaths, personal injuries, etc.

Compare that to this thread where you are complaining that you are unsure if you can pass the exam while working, which is, quite frankly, the majority of people on here. I don't think you're going to get much sympathy from anyone if you quit now. That includes yourself in 6 months when you look back on your decision to quit.

    Passed all sections.

Thank you for your help everyone. I know it may seem like I am being over-dramatic or a “weenie” (lol) but it is really stressing me out. They say it is temporary, but with these exams over my head for almost a year and a half doesn't seem temporary to me.

A few months ago I failed REG for the first time because I was working so many hours at the same time, so I am praying I pass this time around.

I will definitely take all of your guys' advice into account and keep plowing forward until its done. Then hopefully I can look at this post one day and laugh at myself.

I hope this doesn't happen, BUT even if you have to retake sections that you lose credit for it will be SOOOO much easier studying for it a second time than the first.

So, take pride in the fact that you passed them once – you can pass them again (if necessary), and will need less study to do it.

    Remember to pray – Where there's a will, there's a way.

I wouldn’t follow any advice that tells you to sleep less than 7 hours. Your brain needs to process the information, and on sleep deprivation, you won’t be able to retain enough information to pass the exam. The only time where sleeping 4 to 5 hours might work is when you cram the night before the exam.

    REG-
    BEC-
