Timeline between Interview or Final Offer and Relocating

    Hello everyone,

I will be interviewing with a large nationally known company next Friday for an entry level position. They will be expecting me to relocate from NJ to FL which I have no problem. My issue is if they ask the question, “When can you start?” I haven’t been told when the possible start period would be but I would assume they would tell me during the interview. I don’t think it’ll be a very long process because my friend who works there said they are actively recruiting since some people had left.

If the interviewer expects a start date by late May, do you think that’s too soon considering I have coordinate moving arrangements, etc.? I was thinking of saying to give me about a month from the offer date to the start date.

What is the typical relocation timeline from the interview date/final offer date to start date?

Usually large companies if they have relocation assistance they will have dedicated people to help you figure out the logistics of moving. My first job I relocated and ended up moving a week before I was planning to move. I had all my stuff just gathered in my room and they showed up and packed up everything for me and then they told me when they would be dropping off my stuff. They called me the day of and gave me updates on when they would arrive to my apartment, so I just went back home and waited for them.

You can ask them how soon they are looking to fill the position. Which will give you an idea of how long you will be hearing back from them. If you already have a job I would just respond to the question of when can you move by saying that you do need to put in your notice at your current job. Once you get an offer you can work out the rest and usually with a huge move they are flexible.

I think I got travel days as well, so I didn't have to move to a new city and have to start work right away. Definitely ask what their moving policy is once you get an offer so you can plan accordingly. They also put us up in a hotel if you didn't have a place lined up yet. They paid for the hotel for a month while you were looking. They also did an all expense paid trip to the city you were moving over a weekend to look for apartments prior to the move and we were allowed to take an additional person with you and they would pay for that person's expenses.

thanks for the detailed and insghtful info @ruggercpa2b!

My main concern is the company giving me short notice to relocate to their state.
Anybody else have thoughts on their experience or were given short notice to relocate after the final offer?
